24-Hour Comics Day Comes to LASALLE

LASALLE’s Animation students joined professionals and peers in the annual 24-Hour Comics Day to complete 24 pages of comics on Saturday, 5 October 2013. 24-hour Comics Day is a worldwide event that celebrates the art of making comics in a real life scenario.

Over 150 participants converged at LASALLE College of the Arts. It was the largest turnout since the challenge began three years ago in Singapore.

Lock-Lah: Simple Yet Functional

With their simple, fuss-free and streamlined design to combat the problem of bicycle thefts in Singapore, LASALLE final year Product Design students Joanna Christie Lie (20) and Yanti Agustin (20) collaborated with industry professional Inigo (a technical specialist with Toyota) to gain the top prize of $10,000 and a trophy in a national competition for a new bicycle bay design.

Hungry For Art

Benson Lee, BA(Hons) Product Design alumnus and the first Singaporean designer to work for the prestigious Porsche Design Studio (now known as Studio F.A. Porsche), shares his educational journey with The Straits Times "Beyond O Levels" special. He credits his specialised artistic education at LASALLE for bringing out his talents as a designer. "The course of study in Lasalle helped me look at Product Design as a bigger picture... and how design, as a whole, can be a driving factor for economic development across different sectors," said Benson.

The S’pore Musical Boom

The Business Times looks at the growth of Singapore’s musical theatre scene and interviews LASALLE College of the Arts, which launched its Musical Theatre programme — the first in Asia — in 2004.

Since then, LASALLE has nurtured numerous talents such as Elena Wang who has starred in West End and Broadway musicals, Mina Kaye, Seong Hui Xuan and Benjamin Chow, who all nabbed awards at the ST Life! Theatre Awards for stage musical performances.

Students of the BA(Hons) Musical Theatre Programme at LASALLE had the privilege of celebrating International Women’s Day 2014 with President Tony Tan Keng Yam and his wife, Mrs Mary Tan, patron of the Singapore Council of Women’s Organisations (SCWO) at the launch of the Singapore Women’s Hall of Fame.

Saved By The Electric Guitar

In an interview with The Straits Times, Muhammad Sanoccima Shaiful Bahar who graduated with a BA(Hons) Music, First Class Honours from LASALLE College of the Arts, looked back at how music has changed his life.

He shared, "Where I grew up, at my secondary school, and at that age, you get into trouble with drugs and gangs. But it was the guitar that kept me busy, and kept me at home." At a friend's encouragement, he applied to LASALLE after secondary school. "The day I was accepted was one of the happiest days of my life," he said.

Acclaimed Composer Brings Hollywood To Singapore

LASALLE College of the Arts, which marked its 30th Convocation last month, continues to break new ground, from hiring prominent arts educators to nurturing gifted graduates. Among LASALLE's acclaimed global faculty is Dr Joseph Curiale, an Emmy-nominated composer with nearly three decades of experience working with Hollywood's creme de la creme. Dr Curiale joined LASALLE as a full-time music lecturer last August.
