School of Design Communication

New literacy in thinking, communicating and design making.

At the School of Design Communication, students are nurtured to become 21st century designers with new industry contexts, practices and experiences within and outside of their discipline. Students learn to push the boundaries of their design practice and understand contemporary visual culture, equipping themselves with multidisciplinary conceptual thinking skills. An appropriate balance between academic components and studio-based learning methods ensures a good grasp of theoretical knowledge and provides the opportunity to hone intellectual and creative thought processes. The School of Design Communication hopes to inspire new ways of thinking, doing and learning in design, through design and by design.

Making Together

Making Together showcases a collection of narratives and objects that highlights the unique processes of craft from the three schools in the Faculty of Design – School of Design Communication, School of Fashion and School of Spatial and Product Design.

This exhibition is intended to provoke critical discussions about the act of making with others across different design disciplines. Some of these works demonstrate new creative toolkits, while others represent the comfort and care found within creative practices that have helped designers overcome the anxieties of recent times.

Modular type workshop

Programme Leader Jaygo Bloom will conduct a workshop which celebrates the Bauhaus principles of experimentation and modularity in creative type design. Modular design is an essential component of every young designer's skill set, and understanding modularity will help to reduce complexity and introduce flexibility to one's creativity and design approach.

The workshop will explore modular systems through the medium of collage and create alphabets and limited edition letterforms – combining basic elements, primary shapes and colour paper to create a series of energetic one word posters. The session is aimed at participants who are interested in learning about design principles and who would like to create their own modular personal typeface.

Pursuing a design education today means acquiring the thinking capacity and necessary creative skills to shape the future, with human needs as the key driving force. By going beyond the classical disciplines of graphic design, advertising and illustration, our students learn to make connections between different areas of study and create design solutions. The programme will allow students to explore the ever-changing context and role of design communication.
