Art Therapist
Dr Whitaker is an art therapist living in Ireland who practices under the name of Groundswell (www.groundswell.ie), a social enterprise working in the areas of art therapy, art and participation, environmental arts, and arts and health.
Over the past two years, she has been the editor of the Canadian Art Therapy Association Journal and the curator of special issues entitled Art Therapy and Environment, Art Therapy and Visual Culture and Creative Agency and Political Responses through Arts Therapy.
Her PhD (inspired by the ideas of Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari) proposed “the art of movement” within art therapy in regards to subjectivity, improvisation, the choreography of space and physical engagement. She has written Groundswell: The Nature and Landscape of Art Therapy in Materials and Media in Art Therapy (edited by Catherine Hyland Moon) and The Art Therapy Assemblage in Art Therapy and Postmodernism (edited by Helene Burt).
