Tamil Murasu: Innovative fusion of lifestyle elements in fashion design

Ponni Ashok, who graduated with a BA (Hons) Fashion Design and Textiles, created for her graduation collection a range of garments made using upcycled saris, inspired by the back of trucks in India.

Tamil Murasu spoke with Ponni ahead of LASALLE’s 38th Convocation ceremony to find out more about her design philosophy and her plans following graduation.

Berita Harian: LASALLE student produces fashion inspired by the environment

BA (Hons) Fashion Design and Textiles graduate Rynna Shazrina believes that sustainable fashion should be a norm, and all designers should try their best to promote social, cultural and environmentally sustainable ideas and products.

For her graduation project, Tropical Threads, Rynna sought to push the boundaries of traditional upcycling norms, and deconstructed old fabrics and its threads to reconstruct them into new textiles.

Puteri Navet, who is graduating from the BA (Hons) Fashion Design and Textiles programme, believes that fashion is in her DNA, and knew she wanted to pursue fashion while staying on the business side of it.

The LASALLE Show is an annual vibrant showcase of the best and brightest works in contemporary arts, design and performance. A celebration of the graduating cohort’s creativity and boundless imagination.

Over 600 works are unveiled at The LASALLE Show Exhibition by graduands from the Diploma, BA (Hons) and postgraduate programmes in design, fine arts, film, animation, dance, music, theatre, art therapy and creative writing.

Reimagining fashion means to redefine, reshape and de-colonise the dominant global fashion industry by addressing today's social, environmental and cultural issues. It emphasises a holistic and empathic approach to design, production and consumption, prioritising sustainability, inclusivity and innovation. This movement embraces diversity and challenges norms, embodying values of ethical and environmentally friendly practices and employing technology to reduce waste and enhance efficiency.

Trans/Mission invites BA (Hons) Year 3 students from the eight Schools within LASALLE College of the Arts to share their final year dissertation research. The platform hopes to facilitate interdisciplinary exchanges about issues to do with research methodologies, hypotheses and experimentations that shape the students’ practices.
