Powers Of Art Therapy For The Kids Of Fukushima
20 Japanese school children aged nine to 12 are here as part of the Miracle Kutchie Experience, a two-week art retreat programme organised by LASALLE College of the Arts and non-profit organisation Today Is The Day, for kids who had experienced the trauma and continue to live with the effects of radiation every day.
A Dose Of Art To Ease Fukushima Trauma
Though six years has passed since the tsunami caused the nuclear meltdown in Fukushima, many living near the site are still in the midst of rebuilding their lives. Arguably, those most affected are the children – tender in years, they must try and make sense of the mental and physical trauma around them. In an effort to help them, Japanese non-profit organisations Today Is The Day and Children Are Our Future collaborated with LASALLE College of the Arts and New York University to run the Miracle Kutchie Experience.

As Ho Soo Fung, an alumna of LASALLE’s MA Art Therapy programme who is presently a principal occupational therapist at the Institute of Mental Health noted, art therapy is a safe outlet for a child to communicate difficult feelings without actually having to verbally discuss it.

The MA Art Therapy Programme partnered with Dover Park Hospice to present a unique art exhibition, Hospice is… comprising art contributions from people from all walks of life, including many who attended hands-on sessions at LASALLE to express their thoughts on end-of-life care through art.

World Mental Health Day 2013
LASALLE was privileged to play host to the World Mental Health Day Carnival, organised by the Institute of Mental Health and Singapore Association for Mental Health. MA Art Therapy students volunteered at the event and also showcased Voices Through Art, an exhibition of artworks that came out of four art therapy sessions with an addiction treatment facility to draw awareness to addictions and mental health.

LASALLE, together with non-profit organisation Today is the Day Foundation and supported by the Singapore Red Cross, organised the third edition of Miracle Kutchie Experience. The art retreat programme reached out to children from Hirono Town in Fukushima, Japan, who were affected by the 2011 earthquake and nuclear disaster.
