More than ever, creativity, innovation, collaboration and excellence are called for in the economy of tomorrow. Just ask LASALLE College of the Arts graduate Jerome Lim, who decided to transfer out of the National University of Singapore’s Industrial Design programme in order to pursue his dreams of becoming a thought leader of fashion.

“I wanted to be stimulated creatively by pursuing a degree that marries design and business. At LASALLE, I was able to engage both my left and right brain in a dynamic discipline,” said Jerome.

An impressive flurry of firsts were celebrated this afternoon at LASALLE College of the Arts’ landmark 30th Convocation, from the graduation of LASALLE’s first batch of students in MA Arts Pedagogy and Practice to its first Dare to Dream scholarship recipient, awarded to promising young artists with special needs. Mr Ong Ye Kung, Acting Minister for Education (Higher Education and Skills), graced the event as Guest of Honour.

LASALLE BA(Hons) Fine Arts Programme Leader Hazel Lim is one of several artists in Singapore who uses paper as a main subject in her artwork, despite it often being regarded as a 'lesser' medium. While working with paper has often been considered more of a craft than a fine art, these artists are elevating paper to a new level through their works, showing that paper is not just a material to be painted or drawn on.

For those who had witnessed Tremble Tremble by Irish artist Jesse Jones during the 57th Venice Biennale this year, many left filled with awe. The same atmosphere at the Pavilion of Ireland was recreated by Jones at LASALLE’s Institute of Contemporary Arts Singapore (ICAS), and as an arts correspondent for Lianhe Zaobao noted, “it is as if one is right in the centre of a movie.”

From early April to end May, almost 900 graduating students’ works will be up for public and industry viewing as part of LASALLE College of the Arts’ annual graduation showcase. Developed over the course of a student’s final year, The LASALLE Show represents the culmination of their artistic journey, as well as the manifestation of their dreams and passions. For the creative industries in Singapore, The LASALLE Show serves as a barometer of the state of contemporary arts and design, and the emerging practices of young artists. 

Electronic music student Mohammad Fairuz Ramlan has created an interactive musical instrument which can produce a variety of sounds, by integrating electronic parts with discarded materials. His instrument is featured in the MeshMinds 2.0 : ArtxTechForGood exhibition, which spotlights works that fuse art and technology in working towards the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

Irish artist Jesse Jones’s Tremble Tremble is an interdisciplinary exhibition that employs installation, film, sound and performance to re-imagine feminist history. In its iteration at LASALLE’s Institute of Contemporary Arts Singapore, which is the exhibition’s first showcase outside of the 57th Venice Biennale, the theme of legacy is even more pronounced.

Where do lost things go? What happens to recovered possessions that never get reunited with their owners? Fyerool Darma's art installation in Lost and found: imagining new worlds traces the journey of these lost and found items, and in so doing, asks questions about our own journeys and losses.

At the inaugural Singapore Creative Awards, two BA(Hons) Product Design graduands took home prizes in the Lifestyle Product category – Andreas Latif won gold with Daun while Xavier Hea won bronze with Moat. They received their awards from Mr Baey Yam Keng, Senior Parliamentary Secretary, Ministry of Transport & Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth. The winning entries were selected by a panel of judges for their incoporation of Singapore's unique culture into their designs.
