Time Crystals

Time Crystals

On 4, 5 and 6 April 2019, space:time presented time:crystals.in the Dhoby Ghaut Visual Arts Centre, Singapore. While normal 3D crystals comprise patterns which repeat only in space, time crystals repeat in time as well as in space. In physicist Norman Yao’s words, time crystals are “intrinsically out of equilibrium, unable to settle down to the motionless equilibrium of, for example, a diamond or a ruby”. This inspired a group of eight passionate art practitioners to create six new works in, on and around a new 3D installation entitled Line Segments. Dirk Johan Stromberg created this tactile and interactive work with the intention to engage composers, dancers, performance artists and audiences in new ways of creating sound, manipulating an image and moving through its design. The structure is itself a mixed media sculpture, an intuitive giant instrument. In its present form Line Segments, consists of four explorations of line: electroluminescent strings that are also controllers, twenty-four capacitive lines on a canvas, three panels each with two capacitive lines and orbs. The orbs act as ends of lines, can illuminate and have a number of rotation and stretch sensors. Visual artist Januarious Rivas III created the wavy lines on the canvas. In a parallel development that is close to our heart, Line Segments has also been used during workshops for children with special needs.
