BA (Hons) Art Histories and Curatorial Practices: Asia and the World launch symposium

To launch LASALLE’s new BA (Hons) Art Histories and Curatorial Practices: Asia and the World programme, the McNally School of Fine Arts is proud to present an international symposium for the exchange of ideas and practices in the fields of art history and curation.

Continuing from the 15th anniversary celebration of the School’s MA Asian Art Histories programme on 3 April 2024, this three-day deep-dive into critical art-, exhibition-, history- and performance-making experiments with embodied thinking and thick engagement to anticipate and navigate state-of-the-art criticism and curation across geographies and historiographies.

Move, feel and breathe this new politics of artistic knowledge. Join us for a roundtable discussion, academic workshop and ground-breaking performances from 4 to 6 April. Details and registration below.

Earl Lu Gallery and Amphitheatre

This is the Asia book launch for Danish-Filipina performance artist Lilibeth Cuenca Rasmussen's recently published abridged retrospective by the same title. With the Southeast Asia premiere of A Void by the artist that decolonises the history of performance art through 11 re-enactments, a roundtable discussion will follow with the artist, Patrick Flores, Deputy Director of Curatorial and Research at National Gallery Singapore, and Vanini Belarmino, Founder and Managing Director of international art consultancy Belarmino&Partners, concluding with remarks from Sandra Jensen Landi, Danish Ambassador to Singapore, and Steve Dixon, President of LASALLE College of the Arts.

Fri 5 Apr

Making Histories, Curating Knowledge
Academic workshop
2:00pm – 5:00pm
Earl Lu Gallery and Amphitheatre

This academic workshop on curatorial agency and innovations in the field of art history brings together key voices across Asia and the world for a robust discussion to set the tone for the programme. Interactive presentations by four curators – Özge Ersoy, Senior Curator at Asia Art Archive, addressing archival creativity; Karin Oen, Head of Art History at Nanyang Technological University, imagining institutional creativity; Shubigi Rao, independent artist and writer who represented Singapore in the 2022 Venice Biennale, exemplifying narratological creativity; and Moses Tan, enabler at artist-run space starch in Singapore, manifesting organisational creativity – will ground open dialogue with workshop participants.

Registration via email to angie.wong@lasalle.edu.sg, limited places available.

Marking Breath
Durational performance
Sunrise to sunset
Various locations across McNally Campus

Danish performance artist Sophie Dupont presents a solo durational performance by moving slowly and quietly across LASALLE's McNally Campus over a span of 12 hours to compose an abstract score, etched on a copper plate and shaped by the near-invisible and hardly simple act of breathing, towards calling attention to presence and wellness.

Open to the public, no registration necessary.

Sat 6 Apr

Do You Breathe? How Do You Feel?
Performance
1:00pm – 2:00pm
Earl Lu Gallery

Performed by Sophie Dupont, Do You Breathe? How Do You Feel? is developed for the programme launch on the occasion of the artist’s first visit to Singapore. The work exemplifies the artist’s research into finding common ground with fellow human beings – for this event, with media artist Urich Lau and movement artist Elizabeth de Roza – by calling attention to the fundamental process of being alive through breathing.

Registration via email to angie.wong@lasalle.edu.sg, limited places available.

People on the Ground
Durational performance
2:30pm – 5:30pm
Campus Green

Danish artist Molly Haslund – together with volunteer participants in Singapore gathered through Critical Craft Collective – will stage a durational performance that creates the silent and calming image of a shared resting and living social body. Like cells in an organism, the performance echoes ecological resonances in environmental sustainability, ending with a collective reflection of the entire launch over a simple catered picnic.

Open to the public, no registration necessary. Indications of interest to participate in the performance are welcome via email to craftcouncilofsingapore@gmail.com.
