Berita Harian: A documentary showcasing the ‘crazy’ business of Generation Z

A browse through TikTok during Singapore's circuit breaker period in 2020, at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, led LASALLE BA(Hons) Film student Nuryn Adryana Abdul Halim to discover the subject of her next documentary short film: Ms Apphia Ling, the young entrepreneur behind local accessories brand Whoaa!.

The seven-minute documentary Hooked on Apphia-Ling became one of the first concepts greenlit for Viddsee's Gen Z Starter Pack, a series of social documentaries that tell the stories of Generation Z in Singapore. Nuryn's film stood out for its detailed research and depiction of a Gen Z woman entrepreneur who balances her full-time job with her passion project.

Another film in the Gen Z Starter Pack, Voices of Youth, is directed by BA(Hons) Film student Muhammad Harris Saifudin. It tells the story of 'hardcore punk' band Spiral, showcasing their positive spirit and the challenges they faced throughout the COVID-19 pandemic.

In this interview with Berita Harian, Nuryn and Harris share more about the inspiration behind their films, what they learned about Gen Z and what motivates them as filmmakers.
