This March, nine Diploma in Fine Arts Year 2 students got the chance to create unique art for ALBA, an e-waste collection and recycling organisation appointed by Singapore’s National Environmental Agency.

Using electronic components and cables collected by ALBA, the artists recreated the organisation logo, as well as a vibrant abstraction of the Singapore map.

This project was both meaningful and challenging as it required students to use only existing scrap material to make art. Taking about a month from conceptualisation to creation, the students were able to explore the given materials in depth and form new perspectives on the afterlives of electronic waste.

Jie Yee, part of the team that recreated the ALBA logo, reflected, “By showcasing how these materials can be transformed into meaningful and impactful artwork, I hope to inspire students whose minds are wild and free to unleash their inner creativity. With imagination, anything is possible!”

ALBA’s representatives stated that they were incredibly pleased with the pieces, which had initially been for a gallery showcasing local eco-conscious artists.

Ms Debbie Leong from ALBA’s marketing department said, “We witnessed the entire process of how the students handpicked the e-waste items and conscientiously stitched them together with purpose. The students’ art beautifully showcased how the next generation is leading the way in environmental stewardship.”

The students’ works will remain on long-term display at ALBA’s new Visitor Centre, launched on 29 May at their Tuas Avenue facility. There, they will serve as inspiration to environmental stewards from visiting schools and corporate organisations alike.
