It was an enjoyable Saturday morning for the 138 participants at The Joy of Arts event held at LASALLE College of the Arts on 2 June 2018, from 10am to 1pm.

LASALLE collaborated with NTUC U Family for this corporate social responsibility (CSR) project, to enable parents and children of vulnerable families to explore, learn, and experience various art activities.

Some of these included animation screenings, screen printing on a tote bag, making a rope necklace and pencil case, drumming, dance workshops for young children aged below 12 years, and simple 3D animation creation from drawings.

Madam Maznah Binte Husin, a mother of three, described the activities as “something different” which all her children loved. “My daughter got to play the drums, and it was our first time trying it out,” she said.

Sharing her view was Madam Diane Wee, a mother of three, who felt that “kids like hands-on (activities)”, and that The Joy of Arts gave her children “a chance to try many things”.

Likewise, Madam Angaladevi d/o S Sakaran found the event to be very interesting, with a lot of learning from the activities and bonding between parents and children.

Chen Chin Tyng, LASALLE lecturer, executive council member of the Education Services Union (ESU) and a member of the NTUC Women’s Committee, said that the CSR project by LASALLE had brought joy to the parents and children. She added that it was heartwarming to see the LASALLE staff and beneficiaries fully immersed and enjoying every minute of making art together.

Women leaders from the ESU and NTUC Women’s Committee were also present to support the event. One of them, Grace Ho, said, “As a woman leader, I feel very happy that we can help the less fortunate children in one way or another in their growing up.”

“Through the activities, those children who are keen and talented may take up further courses in the arts and excel later.”

That seems likely for Madam Raba’ah Hasaniyah Binte Abdol Shukor, whose son was seen to be exceptionally good at drawing with a bamboo stick and charcoal, even though it was his first time doing the activity. As her son is “always drawing at home”, Madam Raba’ah thought that his participation at The Joy of Arts event could help to further his interest in the arts.

Overall, the joy created through this event was nicely summarised by Agnes Wan, Director, Division of Human Resources at LASALLE College of the Arts. “We are very happy that the CSR event in collaboration with NTUC U Family turned out to be a success - touching in some ways to the beneficiaries on the Joy of Art,” she said.

“The activities allowed the children to enjoy their childhood and in some instances, exercise their creativity at such a young age. Hearing the laughter, seeing their excitement and observing some of them in deep concentration when doing their artwork was very gratifying indeed.”
