ExhibitionWe use our hands to understand the world. When we hold the people and things we love, we develop, through touch, an understanding of them that is both unique and personal. We create layers of knowledge that emit familiarity and linger within us as phantoms of tactile memory embedded beneath our skin. As we touch, we gain new experiences that change us, moment by moment.
On the other hand, be it from the oils on our skin or the heat of our palms, our touch—no matter its duration—can also change an artwork. It is why our tactile
desires are often restrained in white cube exhibition spaces—their timeless, liminal conditions protecting and preserving the works not only physically, but conceptually.
In the discomfort of the white cube, we inevitably wonder:
What is any experience without touch?
Can we truly love art, if our hands have never known how much a sculpture weighs?
Are imagination and vision alone sufficient to supplement the delicate touch of paper beneath our fingertips?
In this exhibition, we forgo the white cube and present works of contemporary fine arts from 11 graduate artists from LASALLE’s BA (Hons) Fine Arts programme.
May you touch the works, and in touching them, may they leave their mark on you.
