Trisha Brown's Early Works: A Lecture by Leah Morrison

Trisha Brown was one of the most acclaimed choreographers and dancers of her time. Her ground-breaking work radically expanded the boundaries of what could be considered dance, and forever changed the landscape of art.

As part of National Gallery Singapore’s exhibition Minimalism: Space. Light. Object., Trisha Brown Dance Company alumna Leah Morrison will present a restaging of three of Brown’s early influential works: Leaning Duets I (1970), Spanish Dance (1973) and Sticks (1973). The works will be performed by students and alumni of LASALLE College of the Arts at the National Gallery on 24–25 November and 1–2 December.

To enrich the audience’s understanding of the programme, Morrison will present a lecture on 19 November, offering deeper insights into Brown’s work and the context in which it emerged in 1960s New York. Morrison will also share how Brown’s work evolved from these early experiments, moving from minimalist site-specific works to fluid-bodied idiosyncratic movements and physically demanding athletic works for the proscenium stage.
