Joo Chiat Sessions is a string band project born out of the COVID-19 pandemic in the heart of the colourful Katong area.
Originally set to study at Berklee College Of Music in the US, jazz violinist Jeffrey Tan had to put off his plans indefinitely. While in Singapore, he was presented with the opportunity to pursue his long-held dream of starting a string band ensemble when the Esplanade approached him to present an online concert featuring the jazz violin back in July 2020. This led to a collaboration with fellow violinist Kailin Yong on an exciting programme of jazz standards arranged for two violins. After the performance, Jeff completed the ensemble with double bassist Felix Phang and guitarist Alvin Wong. The quartet’s repertoire comprises mainly of originals composed by each member. Their sound is influenced by American string band traditions, as well as by a broad range of global fiddle styles.
The Lunchtime Concert Series aims to provide a platform for leading creative musical figures from Singapore and overseas. With a focus on showcasing original work, the eclectic curation features a broad cross section of musical styles designed to expose LASALLE music students and the general public to both hidden and well-known talents.
