The 2023 edition of the Winston Oh Travelogue Award is based on the concept of air || air, an interplay on the English and Malay words with the same spelling that facilitate our existence–both refer to elements needed for us to live. ‘Air’ /er/ in English refers to our breaths, while ‘air’ /ayer/ in Malay is water, the source of life.
The artists have been asked to respond to air || air in a two-part project: first travelling to a location in Sarawak, folloby an exhibition in the three galleries at LASALLE’s Institute of Contemporary Arts Singapore. They have been encouraged to tease out the relationship between Singapore and Sarawak, and draw from their experiences of the natural surroundings and the heartwarming hospitality of the communities involved.
