Explore the artistic language and conventions employed by Italian Renaissance artists, especially in the realm of painting. The allegories, visual puns, signs and symbols, which were easily recognised and understood by Renaissance viewers, are now unfamiliar to us. Being able to read into various elements of a painting enhances one’s intellectual enjoyment of the painting, adding to the visual experience. This course will focus on specific themes and genres to discuss and illustrate the ‘secret’ language used by Renaissance artists such as Botticelli, Fra Angelico, Leonardo da Vinci, Raphael, Michelangelo and Titian.
