Introduction To Asian Art

This course provides a fundamental survey of Asian Art from ancient times to the onset of colonialism and Western influence in the 19th Century. Spanning the major civilisations of Asia, namely China, Japan, India, Southeast Asia and West Asia (the Middle East), this course will cover painting, sculpture, architecture as well as the decorative arts.

It looks at the ways in which social, cultural, economic, and political factors have shaped the development of Asian art, notably the important role played by the major religions such as Buddhism, Hinduism and Islam. The origins of Buddhist art, Chinese landscape painting, Japanese prints, great architecture such as the Taj Mahal, and the impact of colonialism are some of the themes that will be explored in this course.
