Lecturer (BA (Hons) Design for Social Futures)
We are looking for a dynamic designer and educator to teach the BA (Hons) Design for Social Futures programme.
Located in the School of Spatial & Product Design, the programme focuses on creative leadership, global trend forecasting, breaking existing systems and codes and addressing how design can be a meaningful trigger for emerging environments and influence design systems and launch dynamic new approaches to design.
Reporting to the Dean, Faculty of Design, Head, School of Spatial & Product Design and Programme Leader, your key responsibilities will include academic preparation, teaching and delivery of specialised skills and cognitive based contents to ensure the students’ learning objectives are met. You will work collaboratively with teams within the programme and faculty in enhancing the strategic and organisational plans and ensuring that the programme achieves its strategic ambitions and objectives.
You should have teaching and industry experience in the fields of product, service or visual communication design. You will be expected to teach a range of modules that encompass fundamental design skills, including specific design software skills, to strategic design thinking methods and applications. You should have experience in crafting module briefs, creating scaffolded learning frameworks and producing design lesson content. You will also play the role of year coordinator to manage student relations, align students' expectations while shepherding their learning journeys across the semester.
As this is a programme that involves co-creating with community engagement and working with various stakeholders, you will be facilitating community fieldwork of students in various partners' sites. You should be familiar with participatory design methods and be confident in mentoring students in such processes. You will also be involved in the project management of such partnerships between the College and its partners. This includes liaising with industry or community project partners to negotiate partnership terms, manage partners' expectation and students' design process, facilitate learning objectives of students and support the showcase of project outcomes.
Your industry experience should include design expertise in the fields of social care, healthcare, craft cultures, food cultures, material futures, sustainability or other relevant fields where social design futures can be imagined.
Requirements:
- Postgraduate qualification, MA in related field (PhD preferred), or equivalent in a relevant design discipline.
- At least five years or more of tertiary-level teaching experience in the relevant field, and at least four years of full-time industry experience.
- Teacher training qualification is an advantage.
- Good analytical and communication skills.
- Ability to engage students through a range of delivery modes.
- Ability to work well as a member of a team and collaborate with colleagues at all levels.
- Good pastoral care skills would be advantageous.
- A positive attitude to research in fashion and educational fields, and preferably a personal research profile and able to mentor emerging researchers.
