Dr Pow Jun Kai works in the intersection of digital humanities and cultural history. His research interests pertain mainly to the gender, media and sustainability of modern Malayan and Indonesian cultures, including present-day cultural practices in the European and Caribbean diaspora.

Dr Pow holds a PhD in Historical Musicology and an MA (Distinction) in Critical Methodologies from King’s College London, as well as a Postgraduate Diploma in Strategic Human Capital Management. Before joining LASALLE, he held lectureship positions at Singapore Institute of Technology, Singapore Institute of Management, Glasgow School of the Arts and University of Liverpool. His work has been supported by research fellowships from Uppsala University, Leiden University, National Heritage Board, and National Library Board.

As an editor and scholar, Dr Pow has contributed to key publications in the fields of musicology, cultural studies and media arts. He is the editor of a special issue on Rethinking Schoenberg (European Journal of Musicology), co-editor of Queer Singapore (Hong Kong University Press) and Singapore Soundscape (National Library Board). His research has also been published in South East Asia Research, Trans Asia Photography, TSQ: Transgender Studies Quarterly, and the European Journal of Musicology.

In his current research, he explores the role of mediated platforms in shaping Southeast Asian cultural practices and heritage preservation. He is engaged in two research projects that employ the ethnohistorical method, investigating the music, media and community in Malaya and the Indonesian diaspora.

Beyond academia, Dr Pow has extensive experience in arts management and production, having worked across digital, literary, performing and visual arts. He is the organiser of Ceramics Conversations, Composer of the Month, and has collaborated with artists and institutions on projects involving music, dance, video, and translation, leveraging digital tools to enhance the creative engagement and accessibility in the international arts scenes.
