BERITA Mediacorp: Cantonment MRT station becomes a fashion runway for LASALLE graduates Ahmad Hanif and Nurul Izza
Cantonment MRT Station was transformed into a stage for a fashion show when 14 graduates from the LASALLE College of the Arts’ BA (Hons) Fashion Design and Textiles programme presented their collections on Thursday, 14 May.
The extraordinary fashion show brought together fashion industry figures and invited guests to celebrate the talent of young local designers.
Among the graduates who stole the show were Ahmad Hanif Bin Ahmad Jamal and Nurul Izza Binte Rahmat, who each showcased collections based on culture, identity and self-expression through different creative approaches.

Modestscape collection elevates modest fashion to contemporary significance
Differing from conventional fashion shows, the use of an MRT station as a runway location provided a new experience in Singapore.
Significantly, the young designers were only informed about the unique location for the show just a week before the event.
“At first I was very surprised because the concept was quite unusual but after viewing the space, I thought it was very unique and interesting because fashion was brought closer to the community in a public space,” said Nurul Izza.

Through her collection titled ModestScape, Nurul Izza, 24, combines elements of modern modest fashion with a contemporary design approach.
Interestingly, she is the only hijab-wearing student in her cohort, thus making the collection closer to her own identity and personal experiences.
The collection features six different looks that highlight the play of fabrics, folds and structured silhouettes inspired by natural scenery.
“The hijab is not just about framing the face but also about identity. Through ModestScape, I want to show that modestwear is not limited and can move in line with modern fashion, innovation and self-expression while still respecting cultural and religious values,” she shares.

Nurul Izza also expressed her pride when she saw her designs presented on the runway.
“I feel very moved to see my designs presented on the runway. It is a very meaningful experience because I can represent my community and introduce the concept of modest fashion into a more contemporary space,” added Izza.
After completing her studies, she hopes to continue exploring the field of modest fashion and develop her own fashion brand.

SILENT PIROUETTE explores the themes of identity and self-expression
A graduate in the same cohort, Ahmad Hanif Ahmad Jamal also showcased his SILENT PIROUETTE collection.
His collection was inspired by his childhood dream of becoming a ballet dancer but he never had the opportunity to realise it.
“The main theme of this collection is the exploration of identity and gender expression through the world of ballet. These designs challenge traditional perceptions of masculinity and femininity by featuring elements of softness, elegance and emotion through menswear silhouettes and textile experiments,” shared Hanif.

To bring the narrative of his collection to life, Hanif also meticulously created beaded details on several pieces of clothing, with the process taking several weeks to complete.
After graduation, Ahmad Hanif hopes to continue to expand the collection while exploring more opportunities in the fashion and textile industry.
He also wants to continue to challenge the boundaries of creativity through textile innovation and build his own identity as a textile fashion designer.
The public can see the designs of Ahmad Hanif, Nurul Izza and other graduates at The LASALLE Show Exhibition which runs until 3 June at the McNally campus of LASALLE College of the Arts.
