The photographs document trance performances of dance, ritual and worship on the island of Bali. They cover a period from 2003 to 2025 and relate to the book Performance in Bali that has a new edition which will be published by Routledge in March 2026.
The photography is by Professor Leon Rubin, Dean of the Faculty of Performing Arts at LASALLE College of the Arts. He has collaborated with Balinese performers and research academics for over 35 years.
The images focus on the spiritual and physical performance practices taking place during this time period. Changes in approach are within the documentation of the performances, including impact of newer contemporary styles.
