Event details

This workshop introduces Ang Xiao Ting’s eco-theatre practice through the act of pickling. Framed within her methodology of food as dramaturgical structure, pickling becomes a lens through which to examine ecological themes and more-than-human collaboration.

Working with simple fermentation techniques, students will approach pickling not as a culinary process, but as a framework for understanding ecologically focused performance. Through this hands-on session—combining making, sharing, and group discussion—participants are invited to reflect on how ecological thinking might relate to their own practices and curiosities.

Spots are limited, with priority given to students who are interested in the MA Arts and Ecology programme. Sign up today.

Xiao Ting is a freelance hyphenated theatre practitioner (actor, director, dramaturg) and programmer for Practice Tuckshop. Her works have been shown in Australia, Japan, Shanghai, Taiwan, Canada, Sharjah (UAE) and the UK. She was featured on the Robb Report list of ‘Thought Leaders of 2024’.

Her practice in eco-theatre prioritises the various degrees of an integrated ecological practice, such as Recess Time—which received an “Honourable Mention” at #CreateCOP27, a global open call for art in conjunction with COP27. She was the staging director for three editions of Ding Yi Music Company’s inaugural ecologically-themed concert series: ECOncert《声态不息》. Recent directing works include: Extinction Feast (Singapore Writer’s Festival), Performing the Director’s Notes: All The World’s A Sea (Singapore International Festival of Arts) and Pickle Party (Esplanade’s The Studios 2025).

Xiao Ting graduated from Lancaster Institute of Contemporary Arts (LICA), Lancaster University, UK, where she received the LICA prize for Outstanding Achievement in Theatre. She holds an MA (Distinction) in Performance-Making from Goldsmiths, University of London. She is a member of the International Advisory Panel for the Culture for Climate Project (P+ERL, Australia) and is a core member of the Singapore Theatre Green Book working group.
