Event details

This exhibition features BA (Hon) Design Communication students’ engagement and interpretation of the Singapore Graphic Archives, which was founded by writer Justin Zhuang in 2011. Using the archive as an entry point, students reflect on design history and the act of exhibiting design.

The exhibition is an active site of practice and inquiry—Collection as Practice positions collecting, selecting and interpreting as critical design acts. Working throughout the semester, students crafted and curated the exhibition, examining how design collections play a role in forming historical narratives. Through their design gestures, they present how the collection may be re-read and reactivated for the future designers.

Exhibition programmes

26 Sep 2026, 3:00pm–5:00pm

What does it mean to collect and exhibit design? Who decides what is kept, shown, and remembered? How does this affect future designers?

Held in conjunction with Collection as Practice: Design Students Engage with Singapore Graphic Archives, this panel brings together three practitioners who approach the design collection from different vantage points: Justin Zhuang, design writer and founder of the Singapore Graphic Archives; Zara Arshad, design historian and curator for the Singapore Design Collection; and Laura Miotto, an award winning exhibition designer and educator.

The conversation considers how acts of collecting, selecting and interpreting shape the design histories we inherit—and the ones we have yet to write.
