In this conversation, Singaporean ceramicists Kim Whye Kee, Lee Shen Lung, and Ng Yang Ce will be discussing different approaches to making both functional works with an artistic flair. The ceramicists will also share about their creative philosophy and current innovative directions.    

About the speakers 
Lee Shen Lung (b. 1972) is a dedicated ceramic artist based at Jalan Bahar Clay Studios, where she works full-time, creating both functional and visually captivating ceramic pieces. In addition to her studio work, she teaches ceramics as an adjunct lecturer at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts. Lee holds a Master of Fine Arts in Ceramics from Southern Illinois University, Carbondale, and a Bachelor of Science in Ceramics from the University of Evansville. Her practice emphasises functionality, often focusing on wheel-thrown pottery, while maintaining a strong aesthetic appeal for every piece that she creates.

Ng Yang Ce (b. 1990) is a multitalented artist with a background in ceramics, music and dance. She studied at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts and has taught at various primary and secondary schools while engaging in clay art therapy for adults with disabilities. An accomplished ceramicist, she has represented Singapore internationally, participating in festivals and residencies. Ng’s work emphasises texture and colour harmony, reflecting her belief in the balance between human-made and natural elements. Currently, she runs Sync Studio and Syncollectives, promoting creative pottery and innovative ceramic art.

Kim Whye Kee (b. 1979) spent a decade of his early life behind bars. This was where he stumbled upon pottery, which ignited his passion for the arts. Subsequently Kim graduated from LASALLE College of the Arts with a Bachelor of Fine Arts (with Honours) degree in 2013. After a year of apprenticeship under master potter Chua Soo Khim, Kim established Qi Pottery in 2016 to focus on crafting exquisite tea ware. His interactions with tea enthusiasts and experts have shaped his understanding of its intricate qualities that fashion each and every piece of his teaware.
