Have you always wanted to write a novel but not sure how to begin? This eight-session online course is designed to guide aspiring writers through the essential first steps of crafting their first novel.
In a structured and supportive virtual environment, you will explore the
fundamentals of storytelling, including story structure, pacing, narrative voice and character development. Through guided writing exercises and discussions, you will learn how to develop a compelling premise, shape engaging protagonists and build dramatic tension that sustains a reader’s interest.
By the end of the course, you will have developed a clear outline for your novel, mapped out key plot points, and gained the confidence and practical tools needed to continue writing beyond the programme.

About the trainer
Alice Clark-Platts
Alice Clark-Platts is an accomplished author known for her crime novels, including The Cove, The Flower Girls, Bitter Fruits and The Taken, which was a finalist for the Dead Good Reader Awards' Best Police Procedural. Her short fiction has been featured in various publications, showcasing her talent for storytelling.
Aside from her writing career, Alice has a background as a human rights litigator, having worked on notable cases involving Winnie Mandela and rapper Snoop Dogg. She also founded The Singapore Writers' Group and regularly conducts writing workshops, sharing her expertise in creative and non-fiction writing.

Creative Writing: Non-Fiction I, II & III
An exploration of the fascinating possibilities (both artistic and commercial) in creative non-fiction. A very elastic genre with many sub-specialities, this introductory writing course is for those who are interested in writing creative non-fiction, which includes the memoir, personal essay (‘the lyric essay’), travel writing, reportage, comic writing, narrative history and other sub-genres. The prerequisite for Level II is the completion of the previous level or prior experience. Applicants who wish to join Level II and have prior experience in non-fiction writing are required to submit their writing portfolio for the trainer’s review. Creative Writing: Fiction I & II
Uncover the fundamentals of writing fiction with an eye on both the short story and the novel. An introductory writing workshop that will explore setting, point-of-view, dialogue, conflict, plot, tone, voice, character and genre. The course will reference contemporary fiction, film, television and other art forms that demonstrate fundamental lessons in narrative while simultaneously emphasising their operation in polished literary fiction. Join Michelle Elvy in this introductory writing course to build your writing confidence. This basic writing course will explore the ‘how to’ of writing, from building-block structures to meanings between the lines. Explore different writing forms that will help in your own writing, be it fiction, poetry, essay or business materials. Each week, participants will be introduced to a topic with an introductory set of discussion points, writing assignments along with recommended reading and a chance to share your writing drafts.
