Course details
Over four sessions, this course introduces learners to a selected piece of classical ballet repertoire performed in soft ballet. Each session includes structured barres exercises, centre work to develop specific techniques and steps, and guided learning of the repertoire choreography.
You will build confidence in your movement quality, musicality and coordination while gaining insight into how classical ballet choreography is constructed and performed.
This course is suitable for dancers with at least six months to one year of consistent ballet training who are comfortable executing basic ballet combinations.
About the trainer
Jocelyn Chng
Jocelyn Chng has taught ballet for over 10 years. She obtained a Postgraduate Diploma in Education for Dance Teaching in 2018, and her 200 hours Yoga Teacher Training certification in 2024.
Jocelyn’s teaching is informed by somatic approaches and based on a belief that ballet can and should be taught in a safe and respectful way. Her classes focus on facilitating more freedom and range of movement, equipping participants with the knowledge to enjoy movement and minimise the risk of injury in daily life.
She aims to change stereotypes about ballet and bring about a deeper appreciation and understanding of ballet from the general public.
Application information
Soft ballet shoes, to be brought to the first lesson. Any standard ballet attire or yoga attire is acceptable, but wear leggings or tights rather than loose pants.
Ballet shoes: $10 to $40 a pair, to be purchased by participants.
Please note that this course is not suitable for complete beginners. You should have at least six months to one year of consistent ballet practice, and be able to execute basic ballet combinations without prompting, in order to benefit most from this course.
This is not a pointe class and you are not expected to dance on pointe. Participants should be at least 18 years old.
