Red Dot Design Award

A brilliant idea, whether simple or complex, manifests itself in a good product design that could one day be made available in the market and have real value. The Red Dot Design Award believes that the design concept is the defining platform that separates good ideas with good design solutions from the mediocre, to provide a professional evaluation and internationally recognised seal that gives an advantage to the design and designer in the competitive market.

The Red Dot Design Award is among the world's most prestigious design awards. The globally coveted award recognises practical design solutions to everyday problems.

Winner

(Brand Identity)

Nest Hotel

Joshua Yeo

Diploma in Design Communication, Class of 2018

The visual identity reflects the architecture of Tiong Bahru – a quaint neighbourhood in Singapore marked by streamlined modernism and a touch of Chinese tradition. The brand colours are inspired by green jade and gold jewellery. The hotel’s logo displays the Chinese pictogram of the word “nest” in a dynamic manner, conveying a sense of tradition while, at the same time, promising modern comfort.

Brut Magazine

Jessie Tan

Diploma in Design Communication, Class of 2018

The magazine BRUT is a B5-formatted publication which presents icons of brutalist architecture around the globe. It comes in a 4 cm thick cardboard slipcase embellished with a Japanese stab stitch seam. When leafing through it, a striking element is the multiple use of the colour pink, which, with its feminine, friendly appearance, provides a counterbalance to the main subject matter: concrete.

MATERIAL Magazine

Macarius Eng

Diploma in Design Communication, Class of 2018

This issue of the bi-annual magazine MATERIAL features brutalist architecture. The design is modelled on the characteristics of this architectural style, which is reflected in the imperfectly casted raw concrete case, the raw paper stock as well as in the multi-faceted typography.

(Typographic Book)

Small and Ordinary

Advanced Typography Class, led by lecturer Nadine Ouellet

Diploma in Design Communication, Class of 2018

This work deals with the short essay “Approaches to What?” by George Perec. In his essay, the French author questions the importance human beings place on the spectacular and encourages the readers to observe the mundane, the unnoticed, their daily gestures and habits instead. Through graphic implementation, each double page of the typographic book brings a different part of the essay to life. Writing and imagery merge into vivid entities, matching the experimental character of the literary source.

Mirai Rice Cooker

Ronald Tan

BA(Hons) Product Design, Class of 2017

Rice is a staple food source in Asia, and yet also one of the largest contributors to the food waste epidemic. Mirai presents an innovative solution to this issue. This rice cooker features a unique cooking pot with a moulded bottom that is specially designed to re-cook leftover rice into crispy toasted rice cakes, which is a delicacy in many Asian cultures.

Waist Bowl

Jonathan Saphiro Salim

BA(Hons) Product Design, Class of 2017

Many run the risk of spilling a bowl's contents when they try to manoeuvre their fingers out from between the bowl's foot ring and the table surface. Waist Bowl addresses this problem with an elevated foot ring that is moulded for ideal grip from one's finger pads.

OCD Switch

Pakaporn Teadtulkitikul

BA(Hons) Product Design, Class of 2017

Observations about human behaviour and the subconscious tells us that humans are naturally attracted to order, pattern and symmetry. OCD Switch takes advantage of such a predisposition, and employs an interruption of a geometric pattern on the switch to remind users of a light's turn-on mode, thereby encouraging them to turn-off the switch after use and to decrease electricity consumption.

(Domestic Aid)

Swash

Ronald Tan

BA(Hons) Product Design, Class of 2017

Swash is a mini clothes washer for individuals who have no need for space for a full-sized washing machine. It replaces the strenuous act of hand washing clothes by incorporating the washing process of a washing machine, delivering a similar result within a unit that is compact and portable.

Equipped with a cylindrical weight at the end of their spinning shaft, this innovation allows the user to perform the grinding process single-handedly and with less effort.
