Dr Darren Moore is an internationally recognised Australian musician and researcher. His activities reflect his goal of aligning teaching, professional practice and research with his forward-looking output that aims to generate new ideas. He is active in Southeast Asia, Japan, Australia and Europe, working on projects that involve improvisation, multidisciplinary collaboration, experimental music practice, popular music studies and Carnatic Indian rhythms.
Dr Moore was an undergraduate student at the Western Australian Conservatorium, where he completed a Certificate in Classical Percussion in 1993 and a Bachelor of Music in Jazz Drumming in 1997. His commitment to education and research saw Dr Moore complete a Doctorate of Musical Arts at the Queensland Conservatorium in 2013, which looked at adapting Carnatic Indian rhythms to the drum set.
In 2006, Dr Moore moved to Singapore to become a lecturer in the School of Contemporary Music at LASALLE, where he taught popular music studies, drumset and creative improvisation. From 2015, he spent three years living in Japan, working freelance as a drummer and sound artist, playing with the leading musicians from the jazz, free jazz and experimental music scenes in Tokyo. Dr Moore also taught part-time in the Faculty of Global and Interdisciplinary Studies at Hosei University. In 2018, he returned to LASALLE to continue working as a Senior Lecturer.
