BA (Hons) Musical Theatre

Michelle Ler Jin Yi

2018

Born and raised in Singapore, Michelle found her passion in music and dance at a young age. She holds an ABRSM Grade 8 certificate in piano and also plays the guitar and guzheng. An accomplished dancer, she is trained in various dance forms including Chinese dance, ballet, Broadway jazz, tap, contemporary and hip hop. A hugely versatile talent, she is in demand not only as a performer but also as a musical director.

Michelle’s LASALLE credits include Maggie Winslow in A Chorus Line, Hermia in A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Olive Ostrovsky in The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, and Hope Cladwell in her graduation musical Urinetown. Having quickly caught the eye of industry professionals, Michelle was invited to play 1st Keyboard in The Great Wall: One Woman’s Journey (Glowtape Productions) while still in her second year. In January 2019, at a guest Artist in Residence’s invitation, she will join the Australian touring production of Grease—The Arena Experience as assistant to the Musical Director for a show featuring over 1,000 performers.

Michelle has also lent her talents to numerous community events. She was a soloist and musical director for a 15-minute performance at the Yellow Ribbon Project 2017, and has performed and assisted the Musical Director at Musicfest by Sing Theatre @ SGH since 2016. Currently, she teaches ballet, continues to freelance as a musical director and is developing her own original musical material. With her passion for both music and performing, she hopes to help make Musical Theatre more widely known in Singapore and to encourage more people to pursue their passion in theatre.
