Its faculty is led by a community of award-winning artists, designers, educators and researchers, and their practice-led research sets LASALLE apart as an international centre of excellence. Critically acclaimed alumni form the core of the cultural and creative sectors in Singapore and increasingly internationally.
Founded in 1984 by De La Salle Brother Joseph McNally – a visionary artist and educator – LASALLE is a not-for-profit, private educational institution. LASALLE receives tuition grant support from the Singapore Ministry of Education. Its degree programmes are validated by Goldsmiths, University of London.
With an emphasis on contemporary practice and research, our teaching philosophy emphasises idea generation and new interpretations of creative disciplines. Students’ ideas and creativity will be what set them apart as they emerge as a reflective practitioner in the industry.
Students are mentored by international faculty who span a breadth of creative professions from designers and painters to actors, composers, dancers, directors, interactive artists, curators, and many more. Collectively, they represent an international career portfolio with organisations including CILECT (International Association of Film and Television Schools), The Esplanade Co Ltd, Glasgow School of Art, National Arts Council of Singapore, ESMOD Tokyo, National Institute of Dramatic Art, New York University, NYU Tisch School of the Arts, Yale University, and Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts, to name a few.
RESEARCH BY PRACTICE: A 21ST CENTURY APPROACH
All research starts with ideas. More than two decades after its humble beginnings, LASALLE can look back on a long tradition of practice-led research in art and design. The impressive list of successful LASALLE alumni, who were prominently involved in shaping Singapore’s arts scene, attests to the institution’s strength in providing an appropriate academic environment for the creation of novel ideas and new knowledge.
LASALLE values the professional practice of all fulltime and part-time staff as one of its most important assets. Our unique college environment is formed by a faculty of Singaporean and international artists and educators, originating from more than 20 countries worldwide, many are renowned experts in their areas and actively involved in exhibitions, conferences, and performances. The incorporation of their respective expertise in course delivery closely relates teaching and learning to a broad range of theoretical and intellectual concerns in contemporary art and design practice.
Hence, students are constantly exposed to firsthand experience in current research practices, leading to the acquiring of a wide set of knowledge and skills by the time they graduate. These skills enable them to successfully adjust to the multifaceted demands of the creative industries. As a Singaporean institution for tertiary arts education, positioned at the crossroads of diverse cultures within a multi-ethnic society, LASALLE aims to add a distinctive Singaporean viewpoint to the ongoing debate on repositioning artistic practice in a post-industrialised society.
As a private, non-profit arts institution, LASALLE College of the Arts is a registered Institute of Public Character, approved by the Commissioner of Charities, and operates autonomously under the constitution of LASALLE College of the Arts Limited.
The LASALLE Name is associated with progress, quality and uncompromising standards in creative arts education. It is a reputation built from a strong track record of nurturing some of Singapore’s leading creative lights, who have gone on to make a name for themselves regionally and internationally.
The name, “LASALLE” is derived from the De La Salle order of Christian brothers, to which our founder Brother Joseph McNally belonged.
The LASALLE Logo
Our Logo embodies the LASALLE Brand. It reflects our history and captures the contemporary focus of the Institution.
LASALLE was founded by the late Brother Joseph McNally – a De La Salle brother who was also a pioneer of creative arts education in Singapore – in 1984.
The Chevron graphic is derived from the collar of the De La Salle brothers’ robe. Its design has evolved over the years to reflect the current style. This mirrors our philosophy to help students acquire skills and knowledge that help them stay relevant with the times.
