Masturah Sha'ari, co-owner of Maya Gallery, has not had the typical artistic journey one might expect of an art enthusiast and gallery owner.

She graduated from the National University of Singapore (NUS) in 1992 with a major in Economics and Malay Studies as well as a minor in Statistics. It was not until many years later that her love for art and design led her to LASALLE College of the Arts, where she obtained a Diploma in Design Communication in 2000.

Now 52, after two decades without entering a lecture hall, Masturah dived back into her passion and returned to her alma mater to enrol in the MA Asian Art Histories programme.

Turning 50, shared Masturah, felt like a starting point for her to chase her long-cherished dream of getting a Master's degree. "Coincidentally, I met the Programme Leader of the MA Asian Art Histories programme, Mr Jeffrey Say, when an artist friend passed away. He impressed upon me how this master's programme would benefit artists like me. He encouraged me to apply,” she added.
