WritersLab is a first-of-its-kind intensive scriptwriting programme for Singapore writers. A partnership between LASALLE and the Infocommunications Media Development Authority (IMDA), WritersLab is part of the Story Lab initiative led by IMDA, and it aimed to cultivate storytelling as a key capability in an evolving and competitive media landscape.
From January to March 2017, eight experienced writers, including an award-winning children’s author and a Mediacorp screenwriter, took part in the pilot edition. The rigorous 10-week programme was led by Project Director and Emmy-nominated writer, Shari Goodhartz, whose Hollywood credits include Star Trek: The Next Generation, Disney’s Raw Toonage, and the cult hit Aeon Flux.
Through WritersLab, participants sharpened their writing skills and received guidance from visiting international experts, including a seminar on The Philosophy of Genres with script consultant Sophia Wellington, and a lively panel on practical tips for dialogue and production with playwright Jonathan Lim and director/producer Cynthia Hsiung.
The programme culminated with a pitching and networking session, where participants were able to pitch their completed scripts to industry. Three scripts were selected for production on Mediacorp’s Toggle platform, and will be making their debut in 2018/early 2019.
