Opinion Editor of The Straits Times, Chua Mui Hoong, attended LASALLE’s Sing It! Singapore’s All-Star Poetry Reading on 27 September 2017 and was amazed that she felt more refreshed and energised throughout the rest of the week.

According to published research, engaging in pleasurable evening activities (like cooking or in this case, listening to poetry) allowed one to recuperate better for the next day ahead.

In this reflective article, Mui Hoong shared how she enjoyed her time thoroughly at this poetry event organised by Dr Darryl Whetter, LASALLE’s Programme Leader in MA Creative Writing.

With Singapore Literature Prize-winning poet Joshua Ip and Young Artist Award winner Marc Nair orating snippets from their upcoming co-written musical, and Foyle Young Poets of the Year Award winner Amanda Chong engaging audiences on the topic of gender, it was an evening of excitement. Also present were two-time Singapore Literature Prize winner Cyril Wong, and The Writers Centre’s director Chris Mooney-Singh – both of whom gave stunning readings in their own unique ways.

Commenting after sharing some verses on his native Canada, Dr Whetter said: “I’ve been writing professionally for more than 20 years and… I’ve never seen a more vibrant poetry market in the English-speaking world than here in Singapore.”
