Mrs Tan Shook Wah started the Dare to Dream scholarship in 2013 to aid special needs students in their education. Her reasons? She told The Straits Times in an interview that given how she would have more time come retirement, and have the resources and knowledge to help, she wanted to make an impact.

“I wanted to be involved, know the students, email them, chat with them, attend their exhibitions, and help them with internships and employment. I wanted it to be very personal,” she shared.

Many LASALLE students have benefited from Mrs Tan’s actions. They are Nico Tay and Shifa Solihah, both current animation students, Jeremiah Tan, a current broadcast media student, and Isabelle Lim, a photography graduate.

In her pursuit to remain active, Mrs Tan’s latest venture is as co-founder of The Smart Think – a start-up that employs pioneering technology to create lighter and safer protective gear for combat personnel.

She commented how many tend to associate the autumn of their lives to “fall” but to her, autumn represents “harvest” because she is now able to use all she has acquired thus far in life for meaningful purposes.
