Will It Classical? is a showcase of the different embodiments of the language of classical music. The first half of the programme features virtuosic transcriptions of iconic opera tunes of the day, which were considered to be the popular music or film music of that time. The second segment is a display of reimaginations of existing classical tunes, as well as arrangements of modern day pop tunes in a classical vernacular.

Eshan and Valerie will be joined by pianists from the current cohort of classical specialism students from LASALLE in a vibrant collaboration between alumni and existing students.

About the performers

Valerie Tjota is a classically trained pianist, improviser and music educator. Possessing rich experience in both classical music and contemporary worship music, she brings the freedom and sensitivity she receives from contemporary worship music into the world of classical music. A regular performer, she has performed for renowned concert pianists John Perry and Steven Spooner in their respective masterclasses held in Singapore. Valerie has recently completed her postgraduate degree at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland and is currently back at LASALLE as part of the classical music faculty.

Hailing from a reputed family of musicians in Sri Lanka, Eshan Denipitiya is a classically trained pianist, composer, arranger and improviser. Eshan is known for his versatility as a musician and is not limited to one particular genre of music. While at LASALLE, he has premiered many original compositions and participated in cross-disciplinary collaborations with visual arts and dance. Eshan is currently part of the creative team in the Aureus Group, and actively premieres new works combining popular modern day tunes with classical influences.

The Lunchtime Concert Series aims to provide a platform for leading creative musical figures from Singapore and overseas. With a focus on showcasing original work, the eclectic curation features a broad cross section of musical styles designed to expose LASALLE music students and the general public to both hidden and well-known talents.
