New! The Art of Paper Collage: An Introduction
Join Joanna Maneckji for a course in collaging. Explore this hands-on art form through active planning and learn how to collect paper, explore composition, create backgrounds and practice layering. You will learn how to make gift tags, bookmarks, a photo frame, a small composition and a card.
Please note that for this course, we will not be exploring mixed media collage or digital art-making tools.
What is collage? Collage has its origins in the French word 'coller', which means ‘to glue’ or ‘to stick together’. This art form is a result of gluing magazine and newspaper clippings, ribbons, paint, bits of coloured or handmade papers, portions of other artwork or texts, photographs and other found objects to a piece of paper or canvas, to create a new piece of art.
About the trainer
Joanna Maneckji started to make collages a few years after her son was born in 2003. Even though making collages require a significant investment of time, Joanna finds the process relaxing and the focus meditative. Joanna is as inspired by the topic of each collage as she is by the source of each piece of paper that goes into a collage. She sorts and stores pieces of paper in files by colour, texture or content and reads magazines with half an eye on the stories and the rest on the potential that sits inside the ads and images.
In 2018, Joanna began offering collage classes as a volunteer with the National Library Board. The response was great and she continues to teach a few times a year at [email protected] In 2018 Joanna created Instagram account @the_collage_company where she shares news of her art practice dedicated to 'creative contemplation', a personal practice of quiet time in which creativity bubbles up like a happy stream and thoughts and hopes meet. Today, the Collage Company runs alongside Joanna’s learning and development consultancy where she marries team effectiveness with art to help teams and individuals be more effective, using collage as a medium to collaborate, process thoughts and emotions, and communicate.
Joanna is the author of Letters to My Grandfather, a children's book about losing a loved one illustrated with beautiful collages to be published in 2023.
