Oliver von Essen is a pianist, organist, composer and educator. He is currently the Programme Leader of the Diploma in Music at LASALLE’s School of Contemporary Music.

For many years, he was a lecturer for the jazz and contemporary music programme at the The New School in New York, USA. During this time, and for years after, he was an active performer, playing at countless jazz concerts and club gigs around New York, Miami and Paris. His performance career also includes appearances at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival and the San Francisco Jazz Festival. He was also part of tours and residences in the USA, South America, Asia and Europe.

As a recording artist, Oliver has recorded two albums with his own jazz piano trios, Shanghai Reflections and Tokyo Motion, featuring his own compositions. He has also recorded with the New York-based organ trio, Organic Combustion; performed as a sideman on records by the Nancy Banks Orchestra; and played on Al Ashley’s These are Them, featuring Dave Liebman, as well as Lena Horne’s last album for Blue Note Records, Seasons of a Life.

While at LASALLE, Oliver has recorded a CD with vocalist Richard Jackson, which is currently being mixed and mastered.
