The art of textile design is integral to fashion; design looks to its source for inspiration and expression – in fabrics and materials, colours, patterns and motifs – and as such, textile-led fashion from design houses of Kenzo, Eley Kishimoto, Christopher Kane and Jonathan Saunders have found continued success in the contemporary global fashion market. Textile design for Fashion is further strengthened by knowledge of the discipline’s cultural contexts and is geared towards creativity, discovery and innovation.
The programme provides students with both a holistic understanding of the culture, context and professional practice of fashion, as well as a specialist perspective: students begin sharing common modules before choosing one of four pathways in Fashion Communication, Fashion Design, Fashion Management and Fashion Textiles, where they will develop, implement and realise creative concepts and marketable products.
The Fashion Textiles specialism pathway seeks to promote the creation of textiles for fashion in South East Asia. The emphasis is on experimentation through art making; photography, drawing and digital manipulation is used to develop creative contemporary textile designs. Surface techniques such as embroidery, embellishment, fabric manipulation, traditional silkscreen printing, experimental textiles and advanced digital printing methods support the development process and realisation of innovative fashion fabrics.
Level One grounds students in key concepts and theories in fashion and introduces a range of technical skills and creative practice. It establishes its methodological and knowledge base in Semester One before allowing students to specialise in Semester Two. Level Two of the programme directs students in the creative application of technical skills and knowledge towards a specific fashion market. It includes a wide range of projects, which expose students to working in collaboration with creative peers, individual creativity and industry-focused partnerships. Level Three focuses on independent creative practice geared towards industry. Students are expected to negotiate and realise their own projects and to collaborate with peers from other pathways for innovative and exciting final products and outcomes.
