Former LASALLE College of the Arts student Bernice Chua, who graduated in 2009 with a first class Honours degree in fashion design, was declared ‘Design Graduate of the year’ by ELLE Magazine.

The annual ELLE Awards hails both new and familiar names from Singapore’s fashion, entertainment and lifestyle scene. The competition was based on the highest number of votes given by Elle Magazine readers.

Due to her impeccable craftsmanship, sophisticated style and elegance, Bernice was the choice candidate, beating two other talented contenders, Devina Chen of Raffles Design Institute and Leong Minyi from Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts.

When asked about her fashion direction and style that distinguished her from the competition, Bernice said, “I think my work was selected because it represents a new contemporary vision, yet remains accessible to a wide range of audiences. I like to incorporate strategically-placed shapes and lines for a body contouring illusion, and combine it with personal touches like hand-painting and illustrations that make each garment exclusive and unique”.

Her final year collection was inspired by the architecture of Venice. Through the use of form, structure and intricate detailing, she aimed to evoke a sense of romantic escapism through the representation of the ancient city in her designs.

Aside from this achievement, Bernice has been offered a 2-month internship with DKNY Jeans and hopes to be able further her studies overseas.
