Course Outline This course introduces participants to the history of domestic architecture and interiors. Although it will benefit anyone with a general interest in interior design and architecture, it will also benefit design professionals seeking to supplement their industry knowledge. It is intended to provide those taking part with a visual over view of the topic in order to provide knowledge of how houses, villas and palaces were designed, and how people utilised interior spaces. The focus is on the lifestyles of the better off because this is the best-represented evidence, and is more accessible for those students who want to use ideas for their own design practice. A mixture of archaeological, visual art and surviving examples will be used to illustrate the points being made.

Course Outline The course is designed to provide an overview and understanding of 20th century art (up until the 1960s). It will begin with the Post-Impressionists who rejected the inherent limitations of Impressionism and through their work pointed the way forward towards the major movements of the 20th century. The lectures will explain in a straightforward manner how the main movements of the 20th century emerged and developed, what they were concerned with, how the artists expressed their ideas, and who the main proponents were.

Course Outline The course will begin with the introduction to art and therapy, it will introduce various ways to processing artworks and help participants to make sense of images through art making. This introductory course is designed to combine the theory of art therapy, concept of psychology and to create hands-on learning experiences, including basic counselling skills, and also directive approach in working with art makers. Participants will develop awareness within themselves and apply this awareness especially when helping others. Understanding the power of image(s) and message(s) embedded in a simple drawing, and sometime image(s) that comes from dreams, will be the major focus in this short course. The instuctor will share case examples so that participants can understand the application of art making in this profession.

Learning Outcome

Course Outline This course has a strong emphasis on practical skills and each session plan combines both theory and fun hands-on activities. You will learn how to apply your innate sense of musicality by using the fundamental principles of music such as rhythm, pulse, melody, pitch, timbre and dynamics. You will be introduced to musical tools such as arranging familiar songs, activity songs, simple song writing tips, music and movement, art and relaxation in order to understand the connection between applying music therapy to a particular client or group. The psychological and physiological effects of music will be explored to help you understand the potential of music to put us to sleep or help us stay alert, as well as to develop a variety of expressive, social, emotional, attentional and motor skills. Child development will be reviewed through development of musical skills; while therapeutic relationships will be explored through practical exercises and role-play.

Concluding the 7-week course will be a fun group presentation. This course will not train participants to become music therapists or to practice music therapy, though it will briefly introduce what music therapy entails.

Course Outline America is witnessing a surge in literary interest, with stunning work coming from new emerging voices. What is hot in the current literary scene? What has been left behind? What has become of the Confessionalists, the New Formalists, Black Mountain Poets, Beat Poets, the New York School? New and accomplished writers need to understand the literary traditions they are constantly writing within or against, especially in a community where critics may attempt to define their work. What are the new voices in America and are they relevant for a Singaporean literature? How can a writer learn from the new work coming out of America?
This short course will introduce writers to various historical movements in American writing, to understand how each influenced the other, and to discover for themselves authors whose work may resonate with their own. Course Outline This course is an introduction to the history of narrative film and the key concepts in cinema studies. The course is structured chronologically and participants will move through film history from decade to decade, spanning over a century of moving image history. The focus will be on Western Cinema, alternating between European and U.S. American Cinema History. The goal for this course is to increase film literacy and to raise awareness for the impact of cinema on historical events and developments in society as well as understanding contemporary debates about theories of cinema.

You will explore the key principles of film theory by analysing films, as well as working with texts on cinematic theories and film historical concepts. Background reading will include texts by film theorists, critics, directors and philosophers. A list with texts and film viewing requirements will be provided in the first session.

Course Outline This workshop emphasises “working quickly” – you will be able to complete a few acrylic paintings during the course. The instructor uses a direct approach, which the impressionists called “Alla Prima,” or “all at once.” One of the goals of this workshop is to learn how to simplify and organise visual information to capture the essence of the moment. This workshop aims to be a motivating factor in discovering the joy in painting. Participants will begin to see differently: with the eyes of creative human beings. “The one who perceives differently is able to realise differently.”
The instructor will be working with still life for reference and inspiration to capture and create intimate moments. You will produce unique and beautiful works of art, with a fresh and spontaneous feel. Technique, composition, colour and values will be addressed, you will learn how to make quick decisions and simplify for impact. The instructor will discuss colour relationships, details and forms. Course Outline This course is targeted to teach the fundamentals of drawing to anyone interested and committed to changing their belief system about their own ability to draw. This course exploits the idea of learning motivation of children, who learns best while playing. Learning while playing applies to an adult as much as it does to children, and we often forgot about this. In a world advancing in complexity, this workshop offers hands-on experience that will reveal that ‘education’ can be ‘entertaining’ and is often a very fulfilling combination. This workshop is aimed to provide Edutainment. It teaches serious drawing skills, using the right brain and participants will have fun at the same time.
This course seeks to combine transformational approaches in educational psychology with fundamental techniques of drawing. It will encourage interaction, communications and group participation. This course is designed to loosen up rigid drawing and writing skills and to re-awake the right brain and increase a ‘feel good’ feeling, sense of accomplishment and confidence level. It is open to everyone interested to explore themselves through art. At the end of the seven weeks course, participants will have a new confidence in ’drawing’ and will be able to produce drawings that they are happy with, feel a sense of accomplishment and will shift their limiting belief system about their creative abilities. No prior drawing or art skills are necessary.

For the passionate person with an interest in theatre you will learn:
• Wardrobe Maintenance professional steaming ironing and handling of costumes presets and quick changes
• How to read wardrobe plot
• Assisting with makeup and wigs and hair pieces attaching false hair, eyelashes etc
• Back stage behaviour and safety backstage, keeping calm, panicking actresses
• Emergency sewing repairs and tricks of the trade, jewellery repairs
• Organisational tools for: Bump in and Bump Out
• Terminology – what does it all mean?
This is a fascinating 15-hour introduction course to the world of theatre back stage you will have fun and learn some wonderful tricks of trade.

Anja Landgraf

Anja Landgraf is a German-born fashion designer whose natural curiosity brought her to Singapore in 2004. Having participated in various international projects; she has also worked as a lecturer in fashion design at a local polytechnic until March 2006. She currently teaches part-time at LASALLE and is also the creative director of Stylemates Consulting, a fashion design and bespoke bridal wear consultancy.

Desmond Kon

Desmond Kon has edited more than 10 books and co-produced 3 audio books, several pro bono for non-profit organizations. His work in lifestyle journalism at 8 Days took him to Australia, France, Hong Kong and Spain, and saw him writing numerous stories, including features on Madonna, Björk and Morgan Freeman. Trained in publishing at Stanford University, with a masters in world religions from Harvard University and masters in creative writing from the University of Notre Dame, Desmond is a recipient of the Singapore Internationale Grant. He has been invited to read at the Singapore Writers Festival and Prague International Poetry Festival. Also working in clay, Desmondsculpts commemorative ceramic pieces for his Potter Poetics Collection, these works now housed in museums and private collections in India, the Netherlands, the UK and the US.

Jan-Christoph Daniel

Jan-Christoph Daniel is a documentary filmmaker, educator, film buff and avid traveller. He contributed to a number of international coproductions for German broadcaster ZDF, arte France, Discovery Networks Asia and Singapore’s MediaCorp. He has also worked for the reputable production house Oak 3 films and for NTU’s School of Art, Design and Media and chose Singapore as his permanent base in 2004. Mona Lim

Mona is an experienced administrator and leader in the field of music education. In the early years of her career, she engaged extensively in teaching as well as arts performances. In recent years, she moved into leadership positions in leading academic institutions in Singapore. She was the Programme Leader for the Music Programme in the School of Contemporary Music in LASALLE in which she played a significant role in developing a range of musical genres such as Pop, Jazz, Classical and Ethnic. She has also been interviewed on radio 92.4 on her music composition as a woman composer in Singapore and also on behalf of LASALLE to promote the Music programme’s Piano Ensemble concert. She has also been involved in the Singapore Chingay event with musicians and performers from Singapore & Ireland. Mona is also serving on the Arts Consultative Panel for the Media Development Authority. Outside of work, Mona is an active participant in the Singapore arts scene. She volunteered to form and lead a music percussion group.

Nicole Stinton

Nicole Stinton performed professionally for many years as an actor and singer across Australia, as well as a Vocal Coach and Director for Vogue Entertainment, Spirit Productions, TVNetwork 7 and on various productions such as Les Miserables (2001). She’s taught Musical Theatre, Acting and Voice for over 15 years and holds a Graduate Diploma in Theatre/Music Education, a BA in Theatre and a Certificate in Classical Music, as well as a BA in Musical Theatre from the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts.Nicole has published four books on acting and theatre for students. She is currently pursuing an MBA in Production and Events Management through Deakin University. Nicole, now based in Singapore, works as a freelance Performer, Manager, Director and Vocal Coach with various organisations and productions. This includes LASALLE College of The Arts, 21st Century Performing Arts Festival (Malaysia), Escape Theatre, The Arts House and The Esplanade Theatres On The Bay. She is currently the Festival Director of Short+Sweet Singapore, and is the Founding Director of Arts company Stint on Stage. Nicole’s most recent performance was as the critically acclaimed Norma Cassidy in the musical Victor/Victoria at the Esplanade.

Pamela Fisher

Since graduating from the Nordoff Robbins Creative Music Therapy Center at the University Of Western Sydney, Pamela has gone on to work with various groups and individuals throughout the Asia Pacific Region. Specialising in working with babies, young children and adults with disabilities has given Pamela a chance to interact and ‘meet’ with people from many different backgrounds who are coping with various challenging conditions in their lives. This broad experience has helped Pamela to develop her expertise of being able to assess individual needs of a client. She then is able to prescribe and deliver a Music Therapy program that has clear and quantifiable results.

Pamela’s ability to collaboratively compose and improvise on many instruments has carved her a unique reputation of being able to meet the individual needs of each client/group within a single session.

Throughout her career Pamela has also featured in a broad range of professional musical acts and performances including bands such as Pyjama Party, Soul Juice, The Australian David Bowie Experience, The Australian Smooth Jazz Show and in 2000 performed for over 10,000 people at the South Western Sydney New Years Extravaganza together with her band The SuperModels.

Currently she is singing in a local covers band called “The Rogue Traders”.

Sima Salehi Rahni

Graduated from LASALLE College of the Arts with Bachelor (Hons) in Fine Arts in 2008 and currently studying full time in the Masters of Fine Art programme at LASALLE, with experience in various media such as painting, drawing, Video, photography and live performance.

Serene Loong

With more than 70 local and international awards including the coveted Cannes Gold Lion, Serene is currently the Associate Creative Director of Y&R, Singapore with 10 years of advertising experience.

Susan Olij

Susan Olij is a practicing visual artist with a background in Fashion and an MFA in Fine Arts. Her artworks have been exhibited in Singapore, Indonesia, and Thailand. In 2008 she received a Merit award and Third prize in Photography at the Indonesian Heritage Society Art exhibition in Jakarta She is currently lecturing part-time at LASALLE whilst running Olij Studio, an artist-run art studio. Her multidiscipline art practice is driven by interest in cross cultural studies and theories of thought and belief systems. She is running this specialized course in Drawing, using the research and science of the Right Brain. Olij Studio is a platform for ongoing research in crosspollinating holistic approaches into human thought patterns especially on the subject of creativity.

Suvi Pitkola

- OT & Music Therapist (Finland), M.Soc.Sc. (Australia)

Suvi is a certified Occupational Therapist and Music Therapist with a Masters degree in Counselling. She has worked with children, teenagers and their families since 1989 specializing in clients with multiple challenges in developmental, sensory, emotional and behavioural areas.

Suvi has a special interest in sensory integration and she has undertaken postgraduate training on SI through The University of Southern California (USA) and Liverpool University (UK), as well as participated in numerous workshops targeting sensory defensiveness, SI treatment for autistic children, the MORE and Floortime approaches. She is trained in administering the SIPT, The Sensory Integration and Praxis Tests.

Besides SI, Suvi has a passion for music and sound. She has completed advanced training in SAMONAS sound therapy, Therapeutic Listening and TLP (The Listening Program) and combines these approaches with her SI treatment. Suvi travels the world as a Samonas trainer and supervisor. She is currently pursuing her PhD, researching the effectiveness of Samonas sound therapy in children with autism.

Since 1999, Suvi has worked as a director and co-owner of Kaleidoscope Therapy Centre that offers a variety of therapy services for children in Singapore. She also conducts hands-on music workshops for the Social Service Training Institute and gives regular talks on music therapy, sensory integration and autism for private organizations and schools.

Xin Li

Xin Li received his Bachalor in Arts (Psychology) degree from the University of Missouri, St Louis and his Masters in Counseling Psychology (Art Therapy) from Naropa University, Boulder, Colorado. In America, he has worked with the American-Asian community through his work in non-profit organizations for many years. In addition, he has also helped structure and facilitate youth summer camps between 1997 through 2003 in US. Li has worked with a variety of clients, both in the US mental health services and locally in Singapore.

He has run after school art programmes for teenage students, to develop their creativity and self-expression and has assisted in art support groups for patients recovering for Aphasia. He also has experience working with children of divorced families and adults interested in using art as a tool for healing and growth. He is currently working with a wider variety of clients as an art therapist in a family service centre in Singapore.
