The Certificate in English Language for the Creative Arts is a four-level programme. It is suitable for you if you are planning to undertake an academic programme in English or who want to improve your English language proficiency. You will experience the vibrant and energising arts community within the LASALLE College of the Arts' city-centre campus.
On successful completion of the programme you will have a level of English equivalent to an IELTS 5.5 – 6 and will have developed a set of study skills, which will prepare you for study in a tertiary environment. The Advanced Level of the programme is an English for Academic Purposes course which prepares you for study in tertiary level academic programmes. This is highly recommended for all international students who want to work on their Academic Study Skills and English Language skills prior to commencing their area of studies.

We believe you learn a language by using it and the classes are student-centred and interactive. You will be mentored throughout the programme and encouraged to set individual goals and develop independent learning skills. Self-study and reflection are core to the programme and you are expected to develop learning plans, portfolios, and journals.
In addition to developing your language skills, you will widen your knowledge of the arts during your course. You can attend performances, exhibitions, and talks in addition to undertaking study trips to places of interest in Singapore. Students offered places on LASALLE Diploma and Bachelor of Arts (Hons) programmes are encouraged to prepare for study in their area of specialism through attendance at selected classes or workshops and observing classes.

Assessments and Course Materials
On completion of the Advanced level, you must pass the English Language entrance exam in order to enter LASALLE Diploma or BA(Hons) Programmes. You are required to pass each level of the Programme in order to progress through the Programme and the attendance requirement is 100%. You will be awarded a certificate upon successful completion of each level of the English Language Programme. Please note that students who wish to take the IELTS exam will need to register with one of the IELTS exam centres in Singapore.

Ruth Morgan
Programme Leader, English Language for the Creative Arts
Director, The Learning Centre
Ruth joined LASALLE in 2006 as Programme Leader, English Language and is the Director, Learning Centre at LASALLE with responsibility for academic support provision in the college. Her international teaching experience includes positions in Portugal, London, Brazil and Thailand. Based in Singapore for the past 12 years, she taught English Language to Singaporean and international students and was a teacher trainer in English language teaching methodology involved in delivering programmes to primary and secondary teachers prior to joining LASALLE.
She is an experienced examiner and examiner trainer and was the Singapore Team Leader for a leading UK examinations board in her previous position. Her professional interests include CALL, English language teaching pedagogy, collaborative learning, materials development and strategies for supporting learners with specific learning differences.
There are four levels in the English Language for the Creative Arts Programme. You can enter the Programme at any of the four levels if you meet the entry requirements. You can take a language placement test to determine your level of entry to the Programme.
Contact teaching hours are 20 hours a week and you are expected to do a further 15 hours of directed self-study a week.
