Programme Information

Duration: 3 Years

Award: Diploma in Design Communication

The Diploma in Design Communication aims to meet the needs of the creative industries in Singapore and the region for talented individuals in Design Communication, including fields such as advertising, graphic design and illustration, among others.

Its curriculum centres on the process of purposeful enquiry, utilising rational and appropriate visual research methods to create effective solutions to real world problems. This process is designed to enable you to develop systematic ways of working which lead to successful outcomes based on experiments, visual testing, materials investigation, and reflective evaluation. This reflects the programme’s distinctive teaching philosophy of “thinking-through-making’. Comprising studio practice, contextual studies and technical studies modules, you will discover new ideas, skill sets and ways to work with different people, to think, observe, debate,question and play. Upon completion, you will be equipped with the necessary skills and knowledge required by the creative industry to develop original, relevant concepts and effectively communicate clients’ needs through a fundamental design process in your professional practice.

Assessments: Assessment is an integral part of the learning process, and will be formative and diagnostic as well as summative and evaluative, providing feedback to students wherever appropriate. Read more about assessments here.

Level 1

Introduction to Studio Practice
This module introduces Drawing Fundamentals, Basic 2D and 3D Studio Practice, Critical Thinking, and Personal and Professional Development (PPD) components.

Introduction to Contemporary and Contextual Studies
This module introduces you to the fundamental processes of Contemporary and Contextual studies. You will learn how to develop written work including creative, report, and reflective writing.

Technical Skills Workshops for Studio Practice
This module equips you with the essential technical skills required for the successful execution and interpretation of studio practice briefs. These workshops are designed to encourage skills of research and application as well as the acquisition of techniques and procedures.

Exploration of Studio Practice
This module develops the ability to explore and apply skills and understandings in Drawing Fundamentals, 2D Studio Practice, 3D Studio Practice, Grey Matters, and Personal and Professional development (PPD) components.

Specialist Studio Practice
This module prepares your entry into your chosen specialist area. It has both a diagnostic and a preparatory function.

Key Skills in Contemporary and Contextual Studies
This module introduces the two key skills of Presentation and Academic Writing. You will be introduced to key terms, styles, and periods in Art and Design History.

Level 2

Technical Studies: Digital Technology 1
You will be introduced to the skill sets required to achieve intermediate digital production knowledge to make the most of the potential of the digital medium, while gaining practical experience to properly function in a digital environment. Besides supporting the main studies module in design application, technical knowledge, and software management skills, this module is designed to also enable you to look at new ways to embrace the potential of new technologies in order to remain current and relevant to the evolving trends and demands in design communication.

Contextual Studies: Design History and Culture 1
This module introduces the theoretical and historical underpinnings of visual culture. You will develop an awareness and appreciation of culture and issues significant to the field of design, while gaining a wider and deeper understanding of how design impacts on and is affected by the culture of human society. You will undertake readings to understand the power of text and image in contemporary society and how the integration of language, form, and image has been one of the most fundamental aspects in human civilisation.

Main Studies: Print Based Design
Through this module, you will develop a thorough knowledge and understanding of the creative and ideas-oriented practice of design communication. This module also provides you with the opportunity to understand the complexityof your role as a design practitioner, which encompasses many skills from idea generation to final production. The components under this module include Creative Photography, Personal and Professional Development and Creative Workshop, where the last focuses on industry arts projects, design competitions and/or collaborations with non-profit organisations. You will work closely in collaborating groups on the notion of how design can make an impacton society by devising strong and relevant communication strategies for community projects.

Technical Studies: Applied Technology 1
This module aims to look at new ways of communication in Design through the discovery and exploration of digital technology and its potential. As such, it will focus on the crucial stages and complexity of digital design management. You will develop the basic and essential understanding required for you to master the practical skills necessary for print and post-productions.

Contextual Studies: Design Theory 1
This module aims to offer you an insight into the evolution of Design, the role it plays, and its impact on society. It traces the rich heritage of man’s quest for ideas and forms in visual graphics by examining the developments in writing, printing, typography, photography, and design. It also follows the changes of Graphic Design from traditional to mechanical forms, and finally examines its present state in the electronic age.

Main Studies: Digital Based Design
This module continues to enhance your visual literacy through the exploration of digital based design, which you will extend your ability to communicate a wide variety of ideas. You will also develop and demonstrate your aesthetic awareness and design sensibility as part of the understanding of design fundamentals. You will extend your analytical thinking skills and focus on the language of design communication through problem solving with ideas-driven approaches that involve various methods of analysing and experimentation with visual forms and progressive ideas.

Level 3

Technical Studies: Digital Technology 2
Through this module, you are required to understand and practise skill sets required to achieve progressive digital production knowledge and skills to make the most of the potential of the digital medium. You will gain both knowledge and practical experience to properly function in a digital environment. Besides supporting the main studies module in design application, technical knowledge, and software management skills, this module also aims tofacilitate learning in looking at new ways to embrace and explore the potential of new technologies.

Contextual Studies: Design History & Culture 2
This module provides you with a deeper understanding of key design movements and historical design milestones, which as a result, have shaped today’s contemporary design landscape. As it seeks to trace historical shifts that have occurred from the beginning of civilisation to present, you will gain a good knowledge of design terminology, principles, and movements through case studies, as well as introduction of key designers and their influence on the movements from both Eastern and Western cultures.

Main Studies: Self-Directed studies (Studio Project)
This module introduces you to conceptual idea generation, analysis and synthesis techniques within a problem-solving framework. You will explore and develop fluidity of thought as well as an analytical mind, whilst demonstrating aesthetic awareness and design sensibility. You will take up more directed projects that deal with all aspects of design communication, where the employment of design thinking and idea generation will inform your decision making process in managing design projects. The components of this module also include ‘Live’ Projects, which focuses on developing self-reflections on your career decisions and influences to date, as well as fostering a more active role in defining your own career goals and planning of your future career.

Technical Studies: Applied Technology 2
This module aims to develop in you a more competent understanding of the crucial yet complex digital design management process of your pre-production responsibilities in order to push the boundaries of digital technology. Youwill acquire a deeper understanding of the technical concerns in relation to digital and print production, and develop transferable skills necessary for you to master and apply the practical skills required for a smooth production process.

Contextual Studies: Design Theory 2
This module provides you with a wide spectrum of contemporary design theories and issues, as well as their specific social and cultural identities. You will acquire a comprehensive theoretical understanding of design related to design communication, in both social and cultural contexts of the East and the West.

Main Studies: Self-directed Studies (Studio Portfolio)
This module provides the opportunity for you to apply previous knowledge and skills acquired in solving a self-initiated project to produce a creative body of work, demonstrating creative independence, a high level of creative thinking and understanding, strong conceptual thinking, as well as proficiency in areas which you would like to pursue in greater depth. You will gain an up-to-date working knowledge of industry practice and, at the same time, produce a well-articulated, original and industry-ready portfolio, which is reflective of your readiness and aptitude in stepping forth into the workforce. A component under this module called ‘Live’ Projects requires you to participate in at least three industry-led projects, and one of them could be a self-proposed industry placement where you will undertake specific job scopes and requirements as an intern with an attached agency during the Semester 1, Term 2 Break in November and December.

Dean
Nur Hidayah Bte Abu Bakar

With extensive teaching experience of more than eight years, Nur Hidayah was appointed Dean, Faculty of Design in 2009.

A graduate from University of Central England, United Kingdom with a Master of Arts in Design For Communication, Nur Hidayah carries with her an impressive and distinguished track record in having served businesses, and offered copywriting and design knowledge across major industry segments; established clients included Sun Microsystems, SingTel Mobile, HSBC, Cheers/NTUC, Prudential, Tequila Singapore, STAR Automotive, and ST Kinetics – ST Engineering.

Nur Hidayah is instrumental to LASALLE’s Faculty of Design. She manages the demanding and challenging task of leading seven programme teams in the strategic growth and development of validated programmes.

Over the years, her excellent interpersonal and management skills have enabled her to inspire many students. Her vision and foresight has helped nurture these students into leaders that have contributed to the Singapore creative landscape.

Programme Leader, Design Communication
Joselyn Sim

Graduated with a Master of Arts in International Communication in 2002 inspired Joselyn to substantiate personal research in fields related to International political economy and Communication. Aside from participating in academic dialogues, having been based in Hong Kong as a Creative Head for a content provider company that specialises in global branding; some of the projects she has worked on were award winning portals included MTV Asia, Asia E!Online, CNET Asia, ELLE Hong Kong, British Telecoms, Moet Hennessy and Sun Microsystems.

Having worked in reputable creative firms in Hong Kong, Sydney and Singapore for over 10 years, Joselyn’s exposure to diverse cultures has served her well in her course of work. Her role as Programme Leader has seen her strength in the management of the Design Communication Team, overseeing the teaching developments of the programme team through her organisational skills and versatility in meeting the needs of the programme since her appointment.

Vicente Delgado

Vicente graduated in 2006 with a Masters of Arts (Design) and an image-maker by practice. He has worked in the industries in Europe for more than a decade before an education career in Singapore where he imparts his knowledge to aspiring designers.

As part of the core teaching team in Design Communication for over eight years, he is responsible for both the teaching & learning development in the areas of Image and Communication.

Vicente’s vast track record includes having showcased his works at exhibitions all over the world and work commissioned from international brands such as MTV NY, Asian Civilizations Museum, X-tra Living, Luna-id Theatre, Singapore Arts Festival, The Guardian – London and the Venice Biennale. He was a Guest Lecturer for L’ Observatorie europeen de I’ Objet 00.1 in Venice, Italy and his latest collaboration project is to create visual imagery on a monthly basis for an online magazine called ‘Arta Facta’.

Kathryn Shannon Sim

Shannon graduated with a distinction from the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology, Australia and has worked with people from diverse professional settings as a Copywriter in her eight years of working experience.

Shannon’s strength lies in her ability to understand the intricacies and strategic role of branding and advertising in Asia, and has successfully inspired many Asian brands. Prior to teaching, Shannon has a distinguished track record in having served businesses across major industry segments, which included National Library Board, National Arts Council, Monetary Authority of Singapore, Duke-NUS Graduate Medical School, Goodrich Global and Mr Bean - during her stint at the award-winning agency, Ukulele Brand Consultants.

The string of awards she has garnered - shone through her extensive portfolio of award-winning works - is an affirmation of her worth as an ideas-driven individual. Shannon teaches Advertising Communication and Design Research Methods, and is instrumental in providing support to the Programme Leader for academic and operational matters.

Tan Suang Suang

Suang Suang is one of the longest serving academic staff in LASALLE’s Faculty of Design (Design Communication Programme). A graduate from the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts and the East London College of Technology, she has accumulated a wealth of knowledge in various fields throughout her working and teaching experience of more than 35 years.

At present, Suang Suang is a consultant to Nouvea Studio. A practising artist and a freelance designer, she has participated in several group exhibitions. She is also an active member of the Printmaking Society Singapore and Group 90, where she actively participates and shares opinions at group discussions with industry designers and artists.

Having been in the education industry for more than three decades is undoubtedly a testament of Suang Suang’s untiring commitment to teaching. She has also been tasked to spearhead the students’ Personal Professional Development (PPD) aspects within the Design Communication programme.

Stanley Lim

Stanley graduated with a First Class Honours in Bachelor of Arts (Communication Design) in 2008 and pursued his Masters of Arts (Design) with a graduate assistance scholarship in 2009.

Stanley’s pool of knowledge and strong design sense is gained from being a well-versed Graphic Designer in the creative industries since 2005. The variety of clients that he has worked with includes, National University of Singapore, Prudential, Citigroup and Hong Leong Finance.

Having been exposed to the diverse creative industry, Stanley’s teaching experience comes from his involvement as a part time lecturer as well as being a co-founder of a local design collective called Musement. His role in the collective was instrumental in developing a full suite of design communication deliverables at tight deadlines for his clients.

Stanley has the confidence to work towards the strategic goals and future achievement of LASALLE as one of the world’s greatest arts and design institution.

Jessica Chua

In the course of her creative career, Jessica has always displayed the ability to translate the ideas of her imagination into marketable campaigns, from designing corporate identities and advertising collaterals, to working on prominent accounts such as Sony, Microsoft, Samsung Regional and Yves Saint Laurent.

Jessica was also responsible for steering the art direction of the Sony IBO campaign, and the Australia Tourism Campaign, producing the innovative concepts that included transforming Singapore’s central Orchard MRT station into the cities of Perth and Melbourne, Australia.

During her days as an Art Director at Ad Planet, Singapore, her portfolio includes below-the-line campaigns for City Development Limited, Chevrolet, DBS Bank and the Estee Lauder Group.

Jessica earned her Masters Degree in Arts (Design) in 2007 and is currently sharing her passions in advertising design, digital technology and graphic design with the students of Design Communication as a full time Lecturer.

Muhammad Andri Bin Afandi

Andri is armed with a rich working experience of eight years in the creative industry under his belt before obtaining his Bachelor of Arts (Graphic Design) with a First Class Honours in 2006.

Since joining the Design Communication Programme as a Lecturer in 2007, he never allowed himself to distant from the creative industry in order to impart valuable and current skills to his students; Andri is also at present a practising Art Director. The clients whom he has worked with included SingTel, Ogilvy & Mather, MTV Asia, Yellow Pages Singapore, Land Transport Authority, Epson, British Council, Singapore Tourism Board and Volkswagen where his role was instrumental in creatively developing a suite of above-the-line and below-the-line design communication deliverables.

As a Design Educator, Andri strives not only to impart knowledge to his students, but also to be a mentor to help his students excel in their endeavours.

Colin James Faulks

Colin graduated from the Glasgow School of Art, United Kingdom with a First Class Honours Bachelor of Arts (Design) in 2006. He is a full-time Lecturer in Design Communication and is responsible for both the delivery and the teaching & learning development of the first year curriculum, where he supports the teaching team by providing valuable input for Design Studio components.

His on-going personal practice, inspired by an interest in language and visual culture is his involvement in the Lucky Me art direction collective, comprising a group of like-minded young designers and photographers that collaborates on a range of commercial projects.

Colin’s expertise is his keen eye for colour, form and aesthetics in the area of graphic design - in particular typography, printmaking and illustration. He has played an instrumental role in laying the foundation for aspiring students on their journey to becoming the creative leaders of tomorrow, since he joined LASALLE in 2007.

  • Recognised Singapore qualification: Singapore-Cambridge GCE 'O' Level: 5 subjects (including English) at C6 higher, or recognised equivalent.

Portfolios & Interview Requirements

You are required to attend an Interview where you will present a portfolio of your work that demonstrates your creative potential.

Preparing your Portfolio

  • Portfolio should be A2 or smaller (A4 minimum) and preferably with a zipped cover.
  • A range of at least 10 varied pieces of work should be presented.
  • Your works should include a range of techniques, e.g. drawings, sketches, 2-D work (e.g. painting, printmaking, digital imaging, photography) or 3-D work (e.g. sculpture, ceramics, fashion garments).
  • Originals of work are preferred, however photographs, digital images & JPEG (CD-Rom/DVD) are also acceptable (only for works larger than 60cm x 20cm in size).
  • Works and/or images should be accompanied with labels/captions indicating: title of work, year of completion, medium/material, size/dimension of works, and should be presented neatly in a portfolio and/or folder.

What we are looking for?
You need to be selective in preparing the portfolio to ensure that it best represents your creative ability. The assessment of the portfolio is based on the following criteria:

Portfolio

  • Variety (drawing, photography, painting, design work, ceramics, sculpture, etc.)
  • Exploration (in-depth study of medium, technique or idea/s)

Presentation of Selected Piece

  • Ability to describe Process AND Inspiration of a selected work

Discussion

  • Evidence of ability to Interact AND Express Ideas

What will happen on the Interview Day?

When you arrive:

  • You will be directed to the interview space and asked to lay out your portfolio.
  • You will be interviewed by two lecturers from LASALLE as part of the group interview.
  • There will be up to seven other candidates in your group.
  • While the lecturers are assessing your portfolio, you will be asked to discuss with the other candidates on the topic: What Does it Mean to be Creative? As a group you should prepare some ideas for discussion later on in the interview. You are advised to come prepared with some ideas on this topic before the interview.
  • Once the lecturers have assessed the portfolios, all candidates will be asked to select a piece of artwork from their own portfolio and talk about it for two minutes.
  • You are advised to describe the process of creating this chosen work, its source of inspiration and its development. Be prepared to answer questions from your fellow candidates and the interviewing staffs.
  • Once all the candidates have presented their artwork, the whole group will then discuss the topic: What Does it Mean to be Creative?
  • Finally there will be an opportunity for you to ask questions about LASALLE and the content, learning and teaching offered at Diploma Level 1.

This group interview will last for about two to three hours.

Successful candidates will be given a provisional offer immediately after the interview.
Unsuccessful candidates will be given the option to enrol for the Creative Workshop.

Aims of the Creative Workshop

  • To introduce participants to the idea of the process in a creative journey.
  • To encourage participants to play, experiment, and begin to develop an individual approach to art practice.
  • To encourage participants to express their ideas confidently and interact as a group.

Note for Applicants residing outside of Singapore:

  • You must submit a digital portfolio saved in a DVD/CD to complete your application.
  • All works submitted (including any originals). Submissions will not be returned
  • All works submitted will be used strictly for the purpose of assessing applicant’s eligibility for entry into LASALLE courses.

A graduate from University of Central England, United Kingdom with a Master of Arts in Design For Communication, Nur Hidayah carries with her an impressive and distinguished track record in having served businesses, and offered copywriting and design knowledge across major industry segments; established clients included Sun Microsystems, SingTel Mobile, HSBC, Cheers/NTUC, Prudential, Tequila Singapore, STAR Automotive, and ST Kinetics – ST Engineering.

Nur Hidayah is instrumental to LASALLE’s Faculty of Design. She manages the demanding and challenging task of leading seven programme teams in the strategic growth and development of validated programmes.

Over the years, her excellent interpersonal and management skills have enabled her to inspire many students. Her vision and foresight has helped nurture these students into leaders that have contributed to the Singapore creative landscape.

Joselyn Sim

Graduated with a Master of Arts in International Communication in 2002 inspired Joselyn to substantiate personal research in fields related to International political economy and Communication. Aside from participating in academic dialogues, having been based in Hong Kong as a Creative Head for a content provider company that specialises in global branding; some of the projects she has worked on were award winning portals included MTV Asia, Asia E!Online, CNET Asia, ELLE Hong Kong, British Telecoms, Moet Hennessy and Sun Microsystems.

Having worked in reputable creative firms in Hong Kong, Sydney and Singapore for over 10 years, Joselyn’s exposure to diverse cultures has served her well in her course of work. Her role as Programme Leader has seen her strength in the management of the Design Communication Team, overseeing the teaching developments of the programme team through her organisational skills and versatility in meeting the needs of the programme since her appointment.

Vicente Delgado

Vicente graduated in 2006 with a Masters of Arts (Design) and an image-maker by practice. He has worked in the industries in Europe for more than a decade before an education career in Singapore where he imparts his knowledge to aspiring designers.

As part of the core teaching team in Design Communication for over eight years, he is responsible for both the teaching & learning development in the areas of Image and Communication.

Vicente’s vast track record includes having showcased his works at exhibitions all over the world and work commissioned from international brands such as MTV NY, Asian Civilizations Museum, X-tra Living, Luna-id Theatre, Singapore Arts Festival, The Guardian – London and the Venice Biennale. He was a Guest Lecturer for L’ Observatorie europeen de I’ Objet 00.1 in Venice, Italy and his latest collaboration project is to create visual imagery on a monthly basis for an online magazine called ‘Arta Facta’.

Kathryn Shannon Sim

Shannon graduated with a distinction from the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology, Australia and has worked with people from diverse professional settings as a Copywriter in her eight years of working experience.

Shannon’s strength lies in her ability to understand the intricacies and strategic role of branding and advertising in Asia, and has successfully inspired many Asian brands. Prior to teaching, Shannon has a distinguished track record in having served businesses across major industry segments, which included National Library Board, National Arts Council, Monetary Authority of Singapore, Duke-NUS Graduate Medical School, Goodrich Global and Mr Bean - during her stint at the award-winning agency, Ukulele Brand Consultants.

The string of awards she has garnered - shone through her extensive portfolio of award-winning works - is an affirmation of her worth as an ideas-driven individual. Shannon teaches Advertising Communication and Design Research Methods, and is instrumental in providing support to the Programme Leader for academic and operational matters.

Tan Suang Suang

Suang Suang is one of the longest serving academic staff in LASALLE’s Faculty of Design (Design Communication Programme). A graduate from the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts and the East London College of Technology, she has accumulated a wealth of knowledge in various fields throughout her working and teaching experience of more than 35 years.

At present, Suang Suang is a consultant to Nouvea Studio. A practising artist and a freelance designer, she has participated in several group exhibitions. She is also an active member of the Printmaking Society Singapore and Group 90, where she actively participates and shares opinions at group discussions with industry designers and artists.

Having been in the education industry for more than three decades is undoubtedly a testament of Suang Suang’s untiring commitment to teaching. She has also been tasked to spearhead the students’ Personal Professional Development (PPD) aspects within the Design Communication programme.

Stanley Lim

Stanley graduated with a First Class Honours in Bachelor of Arts (Communication Design) in 2008 and pursued his Masters of Arts (Design) with a graduate assistance scholarship in 2009.

Stanley’s pool of knowledge and strong design sense is gained from being a well-versed Graphic Designer in the creative industries since 2005. The variety of clients that he has worked with includes, National University of Singapore, Prudential, Citigroup and Hong Leong Finance.

Having been exposed to the diverse creative industry, Stanley’s teaching experience comes from his involvement as a part time lecturer as well as being a co-founder of a local design collective called Musement. His role in the collective was instrumental in developing a full suite of design communication deliverables at tight deadlines for his clients.

Stanley has the confidence to work towards the strategic goals and future achievement of LASALLE as one of the world’s greatest arts and design institution.

Jessica Chua

In the course of her creative career, Jessica has always displayed the ability to translate the ideas of her imagination into marketable campaigns, from designing corporate identities and advertising collaterals, to working on prominent accounts such as Sony, Microsoft, Samsung Regional and Yves Saint Laurent.

Jessica was also responsible for steering the art direction of the Sony IBO campaign, and the Australia Tourism Campaign, producing the innovative concepts that included transforming Singapore’s central Orchard MRT station into the cities of Perth and Melbourne, Australia.

During her days as an Art Director at Ad Planet, Singapore, her portfolio includes below-the-line campaigns for City Development Limited, Chevrolet, DBS Bank and the Estee Lauder Group.

Jessica earned her Masters Degree in Arts (Design) in 2007 and is currently sharing her passions in advertising design, digital technology and graphic design with the students of Design Communication as a full time Lecturer.

Muhammad Andri Bin Afandi

Andri is armed with a rich working experience of eight years in the creative industry under his belt before obtaining his Bachelor of Arts (Graphic Design) with a First Class Honours in 2006.

Since joining the Design Communication Programme as a Lecturer in 2007, he never allowed himself to distant from the creative industry in order to impart valuable and current skills to his students; Andri is also at present a practising Art Director. The clients whom he has worked with included SingTel, Ogilvy & Mather, MTV Asia, Yellow Pages Singapore, Land Transport Authority, Epson, British Council, Singapore Tourism Board and Volkswagen where his role was instrumental in creatively developing a suite of above-the-line and below-the-line design communication deliverables.

As a Design Educator, Andri strives not only to impart knowledge to his students, but also to be a mentor to help his students excel in their endeavours.

Colin James Faulks

Colin graduated from the Glasgow School of Art, United Kingdom with a First Class Honours Bachelor of Arts (Design) in 2006. He is a full-time Lecturer in Design Communication and is responsible for both the delivery and the teaching & learning development of the first year curriculum, where he supports the teaching team by providing valuable input for Design Studio components.

His on-going personal practice, inspired by an interest in language and visual culture is his involvement in the Lucky Me art direction collective, comprising a group of like-minded young designers and photographers that collaborates on a range of commercial projects.

Colin’s expertise is his keen eye for colour, form and aesthetics in the area of graphic design - in particular typography, printmaking and illustration. He has played an instrumental role in laying the foundation for aspiring students on their journey to becoming the creative leaders of tomorrow, since he joined LASALLE in 2007.

Portfolios & Interview Requirements

You are required to attend an Interview where you will present a portfolio of your work that demonstrates your creative potential.

Preparing your Portfolio

  • Portfolio should be A2 or smaller (A4 minimum) and preferably with a zipped cover.
  • A range of at least 10 varied pieces of work should be presented.
  • Your works should include a range of techniques, e.g. drawings, sketches, 2-D work (e.g. painting, printmaking, digital imaging, photography) or 3-D work (e.g. sculpture, ceramics, fashion garments).
  • Originals of work are preferred, however photographs, digital images & JPEG (CD-Rom/DVD) are also acceptable (only for works larger than 60cm x 20cm in size).
  • Works and/or images should be accompanied with labels/captions indicating: title of work, year of completion, medium/material, size/dimension of works, and should be presented neatly in a portfolio and/or folder.

What we are looking for?
You need to be selective in preparing the portfolio to ensure that it best represents your creative ability. The assessment of the portfolio is based on the following criteria:

Portfolio

  • Variety (drawing, photography, painting, design work, ceramics, sculpture, etc.)
  • Exploration (in-depth study of medium, technique or idea/s)

Presentation of Selected Piece

  • Ability to describe Process AND Inspiration of a selected work

Discussion

  • Evidence of ability to Interact AND Express Ideas

What will happen on the Interview Day?

When you arrive:

  • You will be directed to the interview space and asked to lay out your portfolio.
  • You will be interviewed by two lecturers from LASALLE as part of the group interview.
  • There will be up to seven other candidates in your group.
  • While the lecturers are assessing your portfolio, you will be asked to discuss with the other candidates on the topic: What Does it Mean to be Creative? As a group you should prepare some ideas for discussion later on in the interview. You are advised to come prepared with some ideas on this topic before the interview.
  • Once the lecturers have assessed the portfolios, all candidates will be asked to select a piece of artwork from their own portfolio and talk about it for two minutes.
  • You are advised to describe the process of creating this chosen work, its source of inspiration and its development. Be prepared to answer questions from your fellow candidates and the interviewing staffs.
  • Once all the candidates have presented their artwork, the whole group will then discuss the topic: What Does it Mean to be Creative?
  • Finally there will be an opportunity for you to ask questions about LASALLE and the content, learning and teaching offered at Diploma Level 1.

This group interview will last for about two to three hours.

Successful candidates will be given a provisional offer immediately after the interview.
Unsuccessful candidates will be given the option to enrol for the Creative Workshop.

Aims of the Creative Workshop

  • To introduce participants to the idea of the process in a creative journey.
  • To encourage participants to play, experiment, and begin to develop an individual approach to art practice.
  • To encourage participants to express their ideas confidently and interact as a group.

Note for Applicants residing outside of Singapore:

  • You must submit a digital portfolio saved in a DVD/CD to complete your application.
  • All works submitted (including any originals). Submissions will not be returned
  • All works submitted will be used strictly for the purpose of assessing applicant’s eligibility for entry into LASALLE courses.
