Design has become relevant to everyday communication in the way it changes, influences, and improves lives. A meaningful design solution not only informs our social and cultural norms, but also inspires creativity and new forms of expression. With the creative industries expanding in Singapore, designers will become increasingly responsible for shaping the collective ethos of an interconnected age.
Advertising Communication fosters the idea of communication and the media as important cultural mechanisms in reflecting everyday life. It requires you to understand good advertising concepts and design communication principles. Graphic Communication seeks to develop an understanding of the visual language and culture in areas of communication such as Typography, Information design, Interactive design, and Packaging design. Image & Communication concentrates on the framework of contemporary image-making within the disciplines of illustration and photography, from traditional methods to digital and mixed-media applications.
The programme's teaching philosophy focuses on practice-based learning, enriching you within an interdisciplinary environment. Coursework is structured to provide you with a range of analytical, reflective, and communicative skills, equipping you to meet emergent professional and industry needs. Level 1 establishes design methodologies and the knowledge base of design principles. It also highlights the rules and core skills that govern the design process, while providing a historical, social, and creative introduction to the design practice. At Level 2, you will become more fully engaged and experimental in developing an understanding of design practice. You will address specialist briefs and nurture your strengths through a variety of projects. At Level 3, you will take on specific coursework and projects to define your area of specialty, bringing together the diverse skills acquired in Level 1 and 2 to refine professional skills that are relevant to practical, contemporary practice.
Teaching Methods: You will attend lectures, critiques, workshops, seminars, tutorials and practical presentations. There will be regular guest lectures by international designers who will bring valuable experience and advice. Engaging in studio work and group and solo projects will also become part of your student life.
Practical Studio 1A/ B: Design Thinking and Practice
From basic idea generation to visual research, you will be tasked to respond to varied design briefs in which you will develop ideas, generate concepts and solve problems. The modules involve a broad range of learning approaches, which will develop skills and knowledge in visualisation and image-handling, layout and typography, 3D modelling and structures, packaging, creative photography and illustration.
Design Skills and Technology 1
This module provides the basic introduction in composing and managing digital communication. Basic techniques, digital rendering processes and digitally aided tools support the practical studio module.
Cultural and Contextual Studies 1
This module supports the practical studio module, providing an awareness and understanding of the philosophical ideas that have shaped the contemporary design contextual knowledge. In this module, you will review the history and theories of Design Communication.
Practical Studio 2A/ B: Design Thinking and Practice
You will develop independent learning and take on more visual research by responding to different specialist briefs, focusing on the approach of broaching pertinent design problems or issues. Design theories are assimilated to develop critical thinking in the process of synthesising a design solution.
Design Skills and Technology 2
This module focuses on the advancements of digital media and software technology in professional design practice exploring a wide range of design softwares, project management processes and production methods.
Cultural and Contextual Studies 2
This module includes the exploration of varying definitions of design through several design issues, the role of the designer within the discipline, and the place of design in society. Particular emphasis is place on the art of narrative, storytelling, as a strong communicating device that blends both visual and textual languages, and multimedia platforms. You will gain an understanding of design working methodologies from conception, to process, to production.
Level 3
Professional Practice: Negotiated Research Portfolio (Advertising Communication)
The negotiated research portfolio encompasses the study of advertising concepts, the design for a well-presented portfolio and understanding of strategies of an integrated campaign.
Professional Practice: Negotiated Research Portfolio (Graphic Communication)
You will experience design practice with a specific social, political or cultural agenda supported by your individual research. Emphasis is placed on the use of appropriate media applications and quality of image and text composition, with articulation of effective design communication.
Professional Practice: Negotiated Research Portfolio (Image and Communication)
This module emphasises independent and self-directed study, where you will embark on a project that is hypothesised by a design issue or problem. You will take on a role as a professional image-maker that are often commissioned by a client/brief. You will continue to challenge the exciting and endless possibilities of the image and visual literacy. The visual phenomenon is an important aspect in this area and you will concentrate on the process of visual storytelling.
Professional Practice: Negotiated Research Portfolio (Image and Communication)

Dean
Nur Hidayah Bte Abu Bakar
With extensive teaching experience of more than eight years, Nur Hidayah was appointed Dean, Faculty of Design in 2009.
A graduate from University of Central England, United Kingdom with a Master of Arts Design For Communication, Nur Hidayah carries with her an impressive and distinguished track record in having served businesses, and offered copywriting and design knowledge across major industry segments; established clients included Sun Microsystems, SingTel Mobile, HSBC, Cheers/NTUC, Prudential, Tequila Singapore, STAR Automotive, and ST Kinetics – ST Engineering.
Nur Hidayah is instrumental to LASALLE's Faculty of Design. She manages the demanding and challenging task of leading seven programme teams in the strategic growth and development of validated programmes.
Over the years, her excellent interpersonal and management skills have enabled her to inspire many students. Her vision and foresight has helped nurture these students into leaders that have contributed to the Singapore creative landscape.

Joselyn Sim
Programme Leader, Design Communication
Graduated with a Master of Arts International Communication in 2002 inspired Joselyn to substantiate personal research in fields related to International political economy and Communication. Aside from participating in academic dialogues, having been based in Hong Kong as a Creative Head for a content provider company that specialises in global branding; some of the projects she has worked on were award winning portals included MTV Asia, Asia E!Online, CNET Asia, ELLE Hong Kong, British Telecoms, Moet Hennessy and Sun Microsystems.
Having worked in reputable creative firms in Hong Kong, Sydney and Singapore for over 10 years, Joselyn's exposure to diverse cultures has served her well in her course of work. Her role as Programme Leader has seen her strength in the management of the Design Communication Team, overseeing the teaching developments of the programme team through her organisational skills and versatility in meeting the needs of the programme since her appointment.
Vicente Delgado
Lecturer, Design Communication
Vicente graduated in 2006 with a Masters of Arts (Design) and an image-maker by practice. He has worked in the industries in Europe for more than a decade before an education career in Singapore where he imparts his knowledge to aspiring designers.
As part of the core teaching team in Design Communication for over eight years, he is responsible for both the teaching & learning development in the areas of Image and Communication.
Vicente's vast track record includes having showcased his works at exhibitions all over the world and work commissioned from international brands such as MTV NY, Asian Civilizations Museum, X-tra Living, Luna-id Theatre, Singapore Arts Festival, The Guardian – London and the Venice Biennale. He was a Guest Lecturer for L' Observatorie europeen de I' Objet 00.1 in Venice, Italy and his latest collaboration project is to create visual imagery on a monthly basis for an online magazine called 'Arta Facta'.
Kathryn Shannon Sim
Lecturer, Design Communication
Shannon graduated with a distinction from the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology, Australia and has worked with people from diverse professional settings as a Copywriter in her eight years of working experience.
Shannon's strength lies in her ability to understand the intricacies and strategic role of branding and advertising in Asia, and has successfully inspired many Asian brands. Prior to teaching, Shannon has a distinguished track record in having served businesses across major industry segments, which included National Library Board, National Arts Council, Monetary Authority of Singapore, Duke-NUS Graduate Medical School, Goodrich Global and Mr Bean - during her stint at the award-winning agency, Ukulele Brand Consultants.
The string of awards she has garnered - shone through her extensive portfolio of award-winning works - is an affirmation of her worth as an ideas-driven individual. Shannon teaches Advertising Communication and Design Research Methods, and is instrumental in providing support to the Programme Leader for academic and operational matters.
Tan Suang Suang
Lecturer, Design Communication
Suang Suang is one of the longest serving academic staff in LASALLE's Faculty of Design (Design Communication Programme). A graduate from the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts and the East London College of Technology, she has accumulated a wealth of knowledge in various fields throughout her working and teaching experience of more than 35 years.
At present, Suang Suang is a consultant to Nouvea Studio. A practising artist and a freelance designer, she has participated in several group exhibitions. She is also an active member of the Printmaking Society Singapore and Group 90, where she actively participates and shares opinions at group discussions with industry designers and artists.
Having been in the education industry for more than three decades is undoubtedly a testament of Suang Suang's untiring commitment to teaching. She has also been tasked to spearhead the students' Personal Professional Development (PPD) aspects within the Design Communication programme.
Stanley Lim
Lecturer, Design Communication
Stanley graduated with a First Class Honours in Bachelor of Arts (Communication Design) in 2008 and pursued his Masters of Arts (Design) with a graduate assistance scholarship in 2009.
Stanley's pool of knowledge and strong design sense is gained from being a well-versed Graphic Designer in the creative industries since 2005. The variety of clients that he has worked with includes, National University of Singapore, Prudential, Citigroup and Hong Leong Finance.
Having been exposed to the diverse creative industry, Stanley's teaching experience comes from his involvement as a part time lecturer as well as being a co-founder of a local design collective called Musement. His role in the collective was instrumental in developing a full suite of design communication deliverables at tight deadlines for his clients.
Stanley has the confidence to work towards the strategic goals and future achievement of LASALLE as one of the world's greatest arts and design institution.
Jessica Chua
Lecturer, Design Communication
In the course of her creative career, Jessica has always displayed the ability to translate the ideas of her imagination into marketable campaigns, from designing corporate identities and advertising collaterals, to working on prominent accounts such as Sony, Microsoft, Samsung Regional and Yves Saint Laurent.
Jessica was also responsible for steering the art direction of the Sony IBO campaign, and the Australia Tourism Campaign, producing the innovative concepts that included transforming Singapore's central Orchard MRT station into the cities of Perth and Melbourne, Australia.
During her days as an Art Director at Ad Planet, Singapore, her portfolio includes below-the-line campaigns for City Development Limited, Chevrolet, DBS Bank and the Estee Lauder Group.
Jessica earned her Masters Degree in Arts (Design) in 2007 and is currently sharing her passions in advertising design, digital technology and graphic design with the students of Design Communication as a full time Lecturer.
Muhammad Andri Bin Afandi
Lecturer, Design Communication
Andri is armed with a rich working experience of eight years in the creative industry under his belt before obtaining his Bachelor of Arts (Graphic Design) with a First Class Honours in 2006.
Since joining the Design Communication Programme as a Lecturer in 2007, he never allowed himself to distant from the creative industry in order to impart valuable and current skills to his students; Andri is also at present a practising Art Director. The clients whom he has worked with included SingTel, Ogilvy & Mather, MTV Asia, Yellow Pages Singapore, Land Transport Authority, Epson, British Council, Singapore Tourism Board and Volkswagen where his role was instrumental in creatively developing a suite of above-the-line and below-the-line design communication deliverables.
As a Design Educator, Andri strives not only to impart knowledge to his students, but also to be a mentor to help his students excel in their endeavours.
Colin James Faulks
Lecturer, Design Communication
Colin graduated from the Glasgow School of Art, United Kingdom with a First Class Honours Bachelor of Arts (Design) in 2006. He is a full-time Lecturer in Design Communication and is responsible for both the delivery and the teaching & learning development of the first year curriculum, where he supports the teaching team by providing valuable input for Design Studio components.
His on-going personal practice, inspired by an interest in language and visual culture is his involvement in the Lucky Me art direction collective, comprising a group of like-minded young designers and photographers that collaborates on a range of commercial projects.
Colin's expertise is his keen eye for colour, form and aesthetics in the area of graphic design - in particular typography, printmaking and illustration. He has played an instrumental role in laying the foundation for aspiring students on their journey to becoming the creative leaders of tomorrow, since he joined LASALLE in 2007.

Colin's expertise is his keen eye for colour, form and aesthetics in the area of graphic design - in particular typography, printmaking and illustration. He has played an instrumental role in laying the foundation for aspiring students on their journey to becoming the creative leaders of tomorrow, since he joined LASALLE in 2007.
